Clinton tangles with Obama in 'Oppression Sweepstakes'

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama may be competing in the South Carolina Democratic Primary Saturday, but they're also vying for the top prize in another contest: The Oppression Sweepstakes. That's how Michael Jelani Cobb, an African-American historian, describes the surge of venom that recently erupted between the Clinton and Obama camps. The sweepstakes kicks in when two excluded groups find themselves competing for the same prize. He says that took place in the 19th century when the abolitionist, Frederick Douglass and his ally, women's rights' activist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, argued over what group should first be granted the right to vote: black men or white women. "Groups that are excluded are often concerned with other excluded groups getting ahead of them as opposed to keeping their eyes on the main issues," Cobb says. "You wind up with a lot of squabbling among the disempowered for the Oppression Sweepstakes."

The anger, though, isn't restricted to their dueling campaign staffs. It's also spread to some African-American women voters.

Man, everyone is just a victim anymore.

If women want to see “oppression” they should visit a Muslim country; blacks anywhere in Africa, with few exceptions. Both groups should be down on their knees thanking Almighty God that Providence has allowed them to live in the greatest country on Earth...the United States of America!

Yeah, Obama talks like he’s going to let whites off the hook but he doesn’t have that kind of power even if he becomes president. That’s what white Obama supporters think, that everyone is just going to get along so well and smile at each other all the time and hold no animosity towards each other. Revenge has been a key driver in many race-based initiatives. How is this one different?

Didn’t Oprah, Obama’s #1 backer, once ask the white audience in her show to stand up and apologize for the slavery?

That’s totally my sneaking suspicion, especially considering the church of which Obama’s been a member of many years. I think whites are being played, and a lot of the idiots have that vague white guilt and fall for it. They’re falling all over themselves to vote for the first black president, and paying no heed to his actual record and history.

You have got to be kidding me! Oprah Winfrey is a racist, sure, but is she that stupid? Hell, maybe she is.

"You wind up with a lot of squabbling among the disempowered for the Oppression Sweepstakes."

Wow, typical racist-elitist remark, since, whatever else he is, Barak Obama is talking, talking, living proof that black Americans are NOT impressed and can even hope to achieve the highest office in are land....by getting the most black and WHITE votes, as Obama did in NC.

Bill and Hill will both be seen on TV crying before Super Duper Tuesday, hoping to convince silly women that they feel their pain. They have only two well-worn cards to play: the race card and the victim card. It will be entertaining to see these two charlatans try it one more time. Now that some in the msm have belatedly gotten wise to them, it will be fun to watch.

“Impressed” was supposed to be OPPRESSED. It’s just too early in the coffeepot to be posting this morning.

Amen and Amen!

Oppression sweepstakes, my pitooie.

Should either one become President, oppression in these United States will definitely increase - upon the mightily oppressed taxpaying, hardworking American citizens!

What audacity to ask whites almost two centuries later to apologize for what a minority of people the same race did in the nineteenth century is nothing but guilt politics.

The main purpose of guilt politics is to extract power from your target.

Target: White America

I recently read Out of America: A Black Man Confronts Africa. From 1991 to 1994, Keith Richburg was based in Nairobi as the Africa bureau chief for the Washington Post. He saw the aftermath of the Rwandan massacre, Somalia, he saw the whole unGodly mess that Africa is today, and he became profoundly grateful that he was born in the US and not in Africa
