McCain considers setting benchmarks for Iraqis

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., one of the most stalwart supporters of the war in Iraq, said Thursday that he might propose that the Iraqi government meet certain benchmarks for the United States to continue its engagement. Fellow senators and independent political scientists said McCain's thinking reflected growing concerns within the Republican Party about the course of the war, and also might mark a turning point for the likely 2008 presidential contender, whose previous unconditional backing of the war may have hurt his prospects.

McCain said Thursday that he hadn't yet decided on precise benchmarks. "They'd have to be specific, and they (Iraqi government officials) would have to meet them," he said. Asked what penalty would be imposed if Iraq failed to meet his benchmarks, he said: "I think everybody knows the consequences. Haven't met the benchmarks? Obviously, then, we're not able to complete the mission. Then you have to examine your options."

Apparently McCain discussed Iraqi benchmarks & timetables in the same light Romney did last winter.

KJL @ the NRO Corner brought this to light.

that he might propose that the Iraqi government meet certain benchmarks

Isn't that exactly what Romney sort of proposed -- that McCain recently has been criticizing Romney of and calling it 'setting a date for withdrawal'?

What can one expect from McCain? He doesn't even apparently know the meaning of the word 'amnesty' and says he has never advocated it -- although he has several times in the last 5 years.

I’m enraged about McCain.

These lies about Romney show McCain’s true colors.

He’s a sick man and quite possibly psychotic.

He must be defeated.

mcCain KNOWS he’s stretching the truth on this charge - this morning he meekly claimed the “he understood” Romney’s position to be as he miscast it; mcCain did not firmly back up his charge.

Ping! Does this really surprise anyone? I hope Romney finds a way to circumvent the McCain media lovefest to get the truth before the public.

Shame on you!!! McLAme is not a phony, a RINO, just ask the MEDIA!! LOL!! Neither is his documented Senate record. That’s just the average person’s misinterpretation so we are told even though voice and video records agree with our misinterpretations of his “Was for it before he voted against it”. I hear with respect to Ketchup By and McLame, they share the same crack pipe and bill us for their rocks. They save us tons on the crack addicts’ demand though by not securing the borders.

What I simply do not understand is why he is the frontrunner! We, the Republicans, are the ones answering the polls and voting in the primaries. So how come he’s leading??? How come he’s not way behind the rest? I can’t find anyone (ok, at least not many) on FR who backs him so why is he in the lead? Granted we don’t have much to choose from but... McCain????
