As to the Fred-endorsing-McCain rumor, that's been around forever and Mark Levin has said recently that the rumor originated in the McCain camp. There's a current FR thread on that very subject.

That explains why there are contradictory statements and rumors regarding Thompson. His legal advisors have gone to Romney's campaign, along with a lot of staff, so it would make little sense for Thompson to endorse McCain if all his supporters are of the mind to go for Romney.

I can't find any quotes where Romney uses the words "life-long member". I found one reference in WND where they say he said he was a "life member", which is the correct term:
