Homophobic Church Group to Picket Navy Air Station
Members of a radical Kansas church who say God punished three Navy officers killed in the recent helicopter crash are planning to picket outside Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.
Members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church believe God punished the officers because of the sins of the nation.
Picketing is set to start at noon Saturday at the main gate at SPID and NAS Drive in Flour Bluff. Church members are expected to carry signs that read "God Hates the Nation," and to thank God for the Jan. 16 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of three sailors based here.
The church issued a press release, which reads "Thank God for navy copter crash in Texas, killing three."
Shirley Phelts-Roper, a member of the church, said protestors are coming to Corpus Christi because the nation has made god its number one enemy.
"When you see your military weapons of might being dispatched to the ground and trauma and drama all around, (it) is the promises of God being delivered to you," Phelts-Roper said.
The Topeka, Kans., church group is known for disturbing protests. In the past, they have targeted the funerals of U.S. military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The group's core belief is that every tragedy in the world is linked to society's acceptance of homosexuality.
Military installations like NAS-corpus Christi are also targeted by church members because they believe the U.S. military has declared war on Westboro Baptist Church members.
About a year ago, the group planned to protest outside a local church during funeral services for John Paul Barta, who died in Iraq. Church members did not show up.
Dan Creswell of the local Patriot Guard Riders said his group plans to stand shoulder-to-shoulder, with flags in front of protesters to keep people from seeing and hearing their messages.
"They are the furthest thing from a Christian organization, I think, as one can get," Creswell said. "It's a perverted interpretation of the scripture and it's disgusting."
The closest protestors can get to the base is 500 yards from the main gate.
A base spokesman asked for a comment about the protest said he would "not acknowledge a hate-filled group that preys on service members."

this church group is sick...
....but the term Homophobic is leftist newspeak
Those guys are insane maniacs.
They said on a local radio show that the only people Gos doesn’t hate are the members of this church, all 73 of them.
And, based on the daughter of Phelps’ discussion of how many kids, nephews, nieces and grandkids she has, almost the entire church is related to Phelps.
The good news is that most thinking people understand that these people are in no way Christian, no matter what they call themselves. I'm kind of surprised that Baptist churches haven't asked them to change their name to not include the word "Baptist" in it.
Where’s a gulag when you need one?
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Gitmo?
Interesting that these 73 guys get all the attention from the lib press. There must be 500 times this many in Code Pink.
In most cases, I’d agree ... in this case, their disdain goes far beyond simple disagreement with homosexuality.
Their seething hatred for homosexuals personally is a borderline mental disorder — and I think this is one of the few cases where the term “homophobic” can be used accurately.
A truly detestable group of people. The biblical phrase “judge not, lest ye be judged” is often misused as condemning all judgement ... but was intended to forbid human determinations of Salvation (as opposed to human judgement of conduct).
This group should beware.

I wish an F-18 would do a low pass over their heads at about Mach 1.5. Unfortunately it would break half the glass in Flour Bluff. It would probably be worth it!!!
I think the press like them because they can attach the “church” status to them and thereby defame actual Christians. I can’t think of any other reason these wing nuts would get any more than a passing glance otherwise.
Any bets on how long it will be before these 73 people are found dead after drinking poisoned kool-aid somewhere in South America (ala Jim Jones).
This is a dispicable cult, nothing more. I am increasingly irritated at these whack-jobs tarnishing the name and image of Christianity.

I don’t know if they claim to be Calvinists or not — but their blind following of Phelps (which reminds me A LOT of Jim Jones), and I doubt Calvinism takes foolish idol worship lightly.
Borderline? The Phelps crew is a case study in group mental illness. There are a couple good articles on these loons out there if you want get the full bizarre history.
If Phelps is so anti-gay, why doesn’t he protest at gay pride parades, etc.? As far as I know, he only throws his hissy fits at funerals. He gets some sick thrill out of disrupting funerals. Boo hoo for him. Crazy miserable SOB.
Gitmo might do.
