Is McCain a Conservative?
Washington Post ^ | 1/31/2008 | Robert Novak

Posted on 01/30/2008 10:57:52 PM PST by steveegg

...That was the background for conservative John Fund's Wall Street Journal online column the day before Florida voted. Fund wrote that McCain "has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito because 'he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.' " In a conference call with bloggers that day, McCain said, "I don't recall a conversation where I would have said that." He was "astonished" by the Alito quote, he said, and he repeatedly says at town meetings, "We're going to have justices like Roberts and Alito."

I found what McCain could not remember: a private, informal chat with conservative Republican lawyers shortly after he announced his candidacy in April 2007. I talked to two lawyers who were present whom I have known for years and who have never misled me. One is neutral in the presidential race, and the other recently endorsed Mitt Romney. Both said they were not Fund's source, and neither knew I was talking to the other. They gave me nearly identical accounts, as follows:

"Wouldn't it be great if you get a chance to name somebody like Roberts and Alito?" one lawyer commented. McCain replied, "Well, certainly Roberts." Jaws were described as dropping. My sources cannot remember exactly what McCain said next, but their recollection is that he described Alito as too conservative....

The excerpted portion of the column focuses on the firestorm kicked off by John Fund on Monday. I guess Straight Talk really means Double Talk, and the half that is the "real" John S. McCain isn't at all conservative.

If ‘conservative’ is redefined to mean ‘liberal’, then yeah...

“Is McCain a Conservative?”

No, he’s a pro-Amnesty piece of filth.

McCain is no straight talker, and the idea that he's an honorable man is pure myth.

Yes, he's a war hero, but ever since he's gotten to Washington, he's behaved with very little honor.

The man is a disgrace, and shame on our party if we nominate him.

John McCain is a democrat. The fact that he registred as a Republican should be used to refute that.

He needs to be drop-kicked on down the raod, to register where he belongs.

He is corrupt. He blocks conservative actions. He facilitates the actions of the democrats. He takes action to help the citizens of other nation before our own.

This man is not worthy of public office, and the idea that a person of his character would get anywhere near the nomination for our party, is beyond disgusting. It flies in the face of everything our party ever stood for.

The man is so low he ridicules conservative Christians as if they have no right to participate in the politcal process.

Ah John, that accounts for about 60% of our populace. You do know that don’t you?

McCain is hyper-conservative ...

in San Fransisco. Everywhere else he’s right of center.

McCain isn’t just a passive RINO but he’s aggressively and ardently promoted agendas that are anathema to conservative principles. He tried with his buddy Kennedy to ram comprehensive “amnesty” immigration down our throats. McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform clearly violates the First Amendment. He’s opposed tax cuts. He’s opposed to water boarding which, despite his military heroism, is not considered torture by many and has proved to be successful in obtaining information from terrorists that saved hundreds or thousands of lives. I saw the debate and had to laugh when he styled himself a conservative and disciple of Reagan. What a crock! He’s insulting conservatives by thinking we’ll believe all this stupid spin.

If there was a re-make of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington , McPain could star as Sen. Paine ( no pun intended ) who was played by Claude Rains .

yup, he showed some pretty bad denial tonight in the debate when confronted by his lies. Romney kicked his butt real good.

Things are so depressing, let’s look at the “bright” side:

After 2008 elections rout there will be two big winners:
GOP, as it will once again learn the “lesson” that non-conservatives “Ronald Reagan” wannabees and “Big Pretenders” cannot win and that GOP won’t have McCain “to kick around anymore”, at least in presidential elections. Maybe we can even “Bob Dole” McCain by having him resign from Senate to devote full time to running for President...

Another big winner will be none other than Bob Dole, as from then on, the party won’t be “Bob Dole’d” anymore, it will be “McCain’d”.

1996 and 2006 weren’t enough for establishment, they have to do this in 2008 as well. Without conservatives, they will be in permanent minority, but maybe it’s comfortable enough for them. Let us remember that a true conservative, Ronald Reagan, won with a coalition of Democrats that joined him because of his conservative ideals, not the other way around.

With McCain and Hillary, it will be really low turnout turnoff election, so if conservatives come out in force to vote for GOP senators and flip one or more seats there, Hillary or Obama will be lame ducks immediately.

Suffice it to say that McCain hides behind his old uniform. He’s be nowhere without it. In fact, he’d be run out of town.

But with that uniform, people can’t even mention his name without throwing hero status at him. It’s the way he gets away with the “How dare you attack me!” nonsense—it dismisses all of his numerous failings in the eyes of far too many.

I always vote but, frankly, the prospect of Hillary/Obama v. McCain in ‘08 gives me an acute sense of depression. I think such a choice will result in a low turnout among conservatives. To the average voter it may be nothing more than a choice between “tweedle-dum” and “tweedle-dee.” I may be wrong but at this point I don’t think most conservatives are motivated or inspired by such a contest.

I think you’re right about that. Some of our military heroes have been among our worst civilian Commanders in Chief - U.S. Grant, for example. It’s always a mistake to assume that somehow military capability is automatically transferable to governing. On the other hand, some our most capable war leaders like Lincoln and FDR had no military background. McCain is clearly trying to exploit his POW past.
