he is a genuine war hero, and for that, I salute him.

He makes that very clear, but I still don’t know what that has to do with his politics, he is an 80% liberal Republican which is hard to swallow, his war record is the only thing he has going for him, which to me does not make Presidential material.

re: GOP presidential candidate John McCain’s meteoric rise to front-runner status

Don’t you just love the MSM and how they phrase things! My Mom used to tell me I could ‘make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear’. I know it was not original with her, I thought it came from the Bible, like not casting your pearls before swine, but turns out it’s Shakespeare. Not surprising.

The MSM must have an online service that lets writers find susprelatives to be used when describing anything McCain does or says.

I had to have a name for my company, such as it was, years ago so I decided on “Sow’s Ear Productions”. I have used it now for well over 20 years and I get asked about it frequently. I love explaining how my Mom delighted in encouraging me when I was a kid. No matter how badly I did in something she could always find something nice to say, often involving sow’s ears!

Anyway, I love to see how the MSM can always find a way to make anything about McCain bigger if it’s good and smaller if it’s bad!

“Meteoric rise”, you gotta be kidding!

Like my Mom used to say, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Life was much less stressful when individuals took responsibility for what offends and doesn’t offend them. Teaching a child to ignore what others are saying about him or her is one of the best lessons a parent can provide.

I cannot remember a genuine hero who response to questions with that answer. I have met and been around the following MOH recipients: Doss, Murphy, Boyington, Dolittle and a couple of others. I NEVER heard any of them respond that way. As a matter of fact it was very hard to get them to talk about their experiences.

John McCain Hates everybody who does not worship John McCain.

He probably screams HIS name when having sex.

"I'm not going to waste my time," said a visibly tense McCain, when reminded of his quotes in the column. "You can say what you want. I'm proud of my record, my service with my comrades..."

Yes, comrade... Your comrades are invading the USA...

I had an “uncle” - close friend of the family who was a POW. There’s no way I could no the extent, but I can grasp where you are going on this.

My grandfather nearly disowned me for learning Japanese, as he served in the Pac Theater in WWII and had his ‘experiences’ with the Japanese.

The problem here is that the guy wants to be President.

By the way, does ‘Gook’ include all Asians? Just Charlie? The Japanese?
See how this gets messy?

I would think it meant "Charlie". So what if he said something? Way too much is made of what a person said. We see people branded as racists for some remark, and it's like they should go hang themselves over someting they said. Then you have people who commit outright crimes (in this case war crimes), and people are supposed to forgive and forget, yet condemn as unforgivable the things a person said.

The president of Iran was a freakin' hostage taker for Pete's sake! He violated Int'l Law, and we are supposed to treat him like a lawful head of state. I think it would be interesting for an Asian trading partner to know the guy across the table may have been tortured by him or his buddies, and that he's still pissed off about it.

You aren’t suggesting that we hold a candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America to the same standard that the Persians hold their president to, do you?

I’m not worried about what he said, though it is a strong indicator of what the man is thinking, and it doesn’t get more unequivocable than what he ACTUALLY said.

I’m not suggesting he’s a racist. Not by any stretch. I don’t think my grandfather was, nor do I think my uncle was either. My grandfather HATED the Japanese. Hated. Not because he was ignorant of the Japanese people, but from his direct experiences with the Japanese people.

This hatred he has is JUSTIFIED. It’s also a pretty severe limitation for the man we are going to call upon to work with them as a partner: economic, political, and otherwise.

I understand that your grandfather hated the Japanese and he probably felt justified for doing so.

I harbored the same feelings for a long time toward the Japanese as well.

There are a lot of people who hate Americans for whatever reasons, justified or not. Are they correct in doing so?

Are they correct in hating all of us or just some of us? I was able to cast off the feelings I had for the Japanese because it wasn't hurting them, it was hurting me.

It's behavior, not nationality that should be examined and then praised or eradicated. We kicked the Japanese's ass and now they are complacent, and our allies for the most part.

The pejorative term “Gooks” has but one connotation: NVC, North Viet Cong Commies... aka “Charlie”

The term "gook" was used during the Korean War too.

The SF Chronicle must have considered pulling the story off the internet because it hurts McCain, the candidate they badly want to run against. They instead modified the story to make sure readers understood it was not recent.

The poll numbers at the bottom show McCain was favored over Bush to beat Gore.

CNN-USA Today-Gallup
McCain 55% Gore 39%
Bush 50% Gore 45%

PEW Research Center for The People & The Press
McCain 49% Gore 41%
Bush 46% Gore 45%

Like this would hurt McCain. Anybody tortured has the right to hate those who tortured him for life. Nobody will care.

McCain does share certain traits with sociopaths. Of course, I am not accusing him of being one. He might be merely a pathological liar and mentally unstable.

Look, I agree. The fact that you could cast off the hate, and McCain could not simply makes my original point. The guy wants to be President, and he can’t get past hating ‘The Gooks’.

...and that is oe of the main reasons I could never vote for McCain. He's just too mean a guy.

He knows most conservatives reject his anti-American policies but he votes for them anyway.

I'm beginning to think that Ann Coulter is right about him but I couldn't stomach voting for Hitlery.
