In the Iowa Caucus, McCain finished 4th with 13%, In the Wyoming Caucus McCain was tied for last, in the Nevada Caucus, he finished 3rd with 13%, behind Ron Paul, and yesterday in the Maine Caucus, he finished 2nd with just 22%, some 30 points behind Romney.
He can't win in a caucus state because it's the hardcore Republicans who attend them, and McCain has real trouble with that group of voters.
Well, looking ahead, there are still 344 delegates in caucus states up for grabs. Including 203 on Super Tuesday. If he does as poorly in them as he has so far, then things won't look nearly as rosy for him on Wednesday morning.
McCain: caucus envy?
great and hopefully valid points
McCain has liberals voting for him. He has lost conservatives.
I just love the stories about the Maine Rino sisters Snowe and Collins going to different caucus events to shill for McCain and GETTING BOOED!!
Ping! Here’s an interesting point!
I haven’t seen those stories...but I would love the links...
I haven't heard a coherent argument for supporting McCain yet. The only argument I hear is: "He's electable." Ah, McCain had 69% of Maricopa County (Phoenix Arizona) Republicans vote against him. Is the GOP going to make the same mistake as the Dem's in '04, by going for the "electable" candidate. Say hello to President John Kerry. Kerry was so "electable" that he couldn't even run again this year, due to his "botched joke" about our soldiers in Iraq.
Yes, but if he wins every election but loses the caucuses he’ll win the nomination in a landslide.
> He can’t win in a caucus state <
I heard that McCain would probably win the Louisiana caucuses, but then Louisiana is peculiar in more ways than one!
LA is not a caucus state.
They have a primary on Feb 9th to pick half their delegates, then a state convention on the 16th to pick the other half.
Good explanation.
Republicans who are active enough to get involved in these caucuses KNOW McCain - they KNOW what he is, and they KNOW, that depsite leftist media hype, he is being set up as a house of cards to be demolished in November.
On the other hand, if Romney somehow gets the nomination, he will owe it entirely to conservatives.
Of course, *if* he does that he’s the nominee. The point is that he’s still beatable.
Yes - and they keep showing up at Republican primaries.
“I haven’t heard a coherent argument for supporting McCain yet.”
That’s because there isn’t any, as you say “Coherent” argument for his support. Zip, Zero, Nada, unless of course the voter is Democrat.
What I find particularly amusing is that most of the GOP leadership is openly endorsing for its presidential nominee a guy who just a few short years ago was considering leaving the Republican Party! What does that tell you?
Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Missouri, and Arizona.
Plus leads in proportional states including Illinois, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Minnesota, and Oklahoma.
The best Mitt can do is Utah, split California, maybe Colorado, maybe Montana, Massachusetts.
BTTT. Good thread/comments.
