Death Photo of War Reporter Pyle Found

Photobucket

NEW YORK (AP) - The figure in the photograph is clad in Army fatigues, boots and helmet, lying on his back in peaceful repose, folded hands holding a military cap. Except for a thin trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth, he could be asleep.

But he is not asleep; he is dead. And this is not just another fallen GI; it is Ernie Pyle, the most celebrated war correspondent of World War II.

As far as can be determined, the photograph has never been published. Sixty-three years after Pyle was killed by the Japanese, it has surfaced—surprising historians, reminding a forgetful world of a humble correspondent who artfully and ardently told the story of a war from the foxholes.

Continue to RIP Ernie...America will yet arise to the challenges she faces in this day, just as you helped her to do in yours.

Rest in Peace.

I guess the good taste that prevented the photo from being published is no longer the standard .

“Journalists” today would not recognize his style; he was for America, freedom, and the destruction of fascism.

No, he was not “neutral”.

Don’t you really, really, hate today’s MSM?

Amazing that the photo had never surfaced before. I guess the men who had them just never thought about making them public.

“Contrast Pyle with the ‘journalists’ today.”

the media has been on a downhill slide ever since. How I miss the days when you could trust journalists to give an accurate account, as best as they could, without personal bias.

What flashed quickly in my mind were those ‘heroes’ reporting the SCUD missile attacks from their luxury hotel balconies, complaining the AC was off or some other creature comfort denied them.

In June 2002 I was at a car show in Downtown Florence, Alabama and the library was having an old book sale of the books that haven't been checked out in years. I found the First edition of Brave Men by Ernie Pyle published in 1943 for $5. I read the entire book during the car show because it was so well written and interesting. It is unfortunate that many don't know who Ernie Pyle was and more unfortunate that many don't care to learn. Ernie Pyle was loved by the soldiers and respected by all of them. What newspaper or news agency can say that today? God Bless Ernie Pyle..

Just read a quote on another thread by a US cameraman who was "covering" the Tet offensive.

A Washington Post reporter asked the cameraman why he wasn't filming the horrendous killings the communist North had inflicted on South Vietam after the North invaded during Tet.

The cameraman's reply..."I am not here to spread anti-communist propaganda"."

World of difference between Pyle and junk like today's newspeople.

I read his book. They don’t make reporters like that anymore. Modern “reporters” should read his work and be ashamed.
