Report on the pro-life views of Governor Mitt Romney
Mass Resistance ^

Posted on 02/03/2008 11:51:22 PM PST by Kurt Evans

We believe that Romney's recent pro-life statements and public stands are driven by political ambition and cold calculations about Republican primary voters, not the result of any genuine "conversion."

Governor Romney's failure to fight for the rights of private religious hospitals, his inattention to the types of judges he appointed, his involvement with a health care plan that vastly increases state funded abortions, his inconsistency on the embryonic stem cell issue, his ignorance of the evil of euthanasia and his failure to enunciate the moral objections to abortion have convinced us that he does not fundamentally understand life issues, nor is it an important part of his worldview.

In order to justify Romney's extreme flip-flops on the abortion issue, the Romney campaign has issued statements comparing Romney to Ronald Reagan since Reagan signed a pro-abortion bill into law as California governor before becoming pro-life. This is an inaccurate comparison.

When Reagan signed the abortion bill in 1970, very little was known about the procedure as this was before ultrasound and before research showing that a baby's heart and nervous system is developed in utero far earlier than was previously known. Reagan later called that decision the worst one in his career and authored a book, Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation, that went into great detail about the moral consequences of abortion.

In contrast, Romney has had access to the latest research on abortion, has never apologized for his previous stances and cannot seem to carry on a discussion about the moral implications. Moreover, Romney continues to support abortion-related issues such as stem cell research and euthanasia and refuses to state if he would use his political position to support actual pro-life legislation. This is a far cry from Ronald Reagan.

Congressman Duncan Hunter's endorsement of Governor Huckabee
is helping to bring defense and border conservatives on board:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter...
"Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity."

Duncan Hunter, who dropped out of the GOP running just before the South Carolina primary, was on Neil Cavuto’s show today on Fox News and Neil pushed him pretty hard on who he favors among the candidates that are left.

see the video

Hunter’s response?  Well he didn’t endorse anyone specifically, but he jumped all over Romney for his connections to a Chinese defense contractor that in turn had connections to Saddam Hussein.  That’s not exactly something you bring up about someone you’re prepared to endorse.

So it’s McCain or Huckabee for Hunter.  My guess is McCain, which if that happens will probably make me think a bit less of Duncan Hunter.

I fully understand the concerns here, but see Huckabee’s foray into Massachusetts on Saturday as inexplicable other than an attempt to take down Romney in conjunction with McCain’s efforts in the state.

Ann Coulter incorrectly stated in her Jan 16, 2008 column that the Massachusetts Citizens For Life “endorsed” Mitt Romney. She has used their endorsement as part of her own basis for her endorsement of Romney. MCFL denies any such endorsement.

My inquiry to them, and thir subsequent response are pasted below.

Hello Mr. Private name omitted here,

I apologize for the delay in replying to your email!

Ms. Coutler’s choice of wording in her column was somewhat inaccurate in describing the relationship between MCFL and Mitt Romney. As a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, MCFL cannot “endorse” candidates for public office. Most likely Ms. Coulter was referring to the award Gov. Romney received from the Pioneer Valley Chapter of MCFL, which was given to him at the chapter’s annual Mother’s Day dinner last May.

MCFL strives to collect and disseminate information regarding the voting records and public statements of candidates for public office before elections in order to help our members make an informed choice when voting. We are continually monitoring the statements of the current presidential candidates and informing our membership as much as we can.

Currently, of the major Republican candidates still in the race at this point, only Rudy Giuliani has expressed explicit pro-choice views. Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney and John McCain all support the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

As the election draws closer, please continue to check back with us for the most recent information available.

Thanks for contacting us!

Just curious, I saw on the other thread you were pushing mcCain but on this one you say if Hunter endorses him it would probably make you think a bit less of Duncan Hunter. Care to explain or should we just look at your registration date and figure you’re a troll?

if it was just this one issue, we could perhaps give him a understanding. But not when he passionately says he’s for all kinds of other liberal positions and then says he’s for the exact opposite position with the same passion in his voice.

“Governor Romney appointed 36 judges but a check of their political affiliation confirms that only 9 of them are Republicans. Two are radical gay activists and 14 are registered Democrats.”

You don’t hear that repeated to often on FR.

he was also for gays in the military, at the debate said he’d keep the policy but also opened the possibility of reconsidering it.

Welcome to FR... but ya might want to slow down for a bit until you get your foothold on the local scene. These people eat drink breath politics... and posting old news excerts without linking source is a newbie thing to do. We all were newbies at one time, but get ready to put your flame resistant pj's on if not careful.

Take care... LowOiL

Why did Huckabee campaign in a state he has no chance of winning on Saturday?

Any normal political campaign would be focused in the areas where the candidate runs strongest. In Huck’s case that was down South.

It looks to me like Huckabee was there to complement the McCain campaign’s effort to take Massachusetts.

Rush Limbaugh said a few weeks back that Huckabee was helping McCain and I didn’t believe him.

Now I think Rush was right on that one.

The only other possible stalker in this race was Fred Thompson and that’s because he was supported by some “Establishment” figures in Washington and marketed to talk radio, National Right To Life and Free Republic (known centers of anti-McCain opinion).
