Romney joined NRA in August

Was advocate of gun control

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was a former advocate of gun control.

By David Abel, Globe Staff | February 19, 2007

Mitt Romney, who has touted his support of gun owners since launching his presidential campaign, yesterday acknowledged he did not become a member of the National Rifle Association until last August, campaign officials said.

A former advocate of gun control, Romney during his 1994 run for the US Senate backed measures the gun-rights group opposed, such as a five-day waiting period on gun sales and a ban on certain assault weapons.

The former Massachusetts governor has been criticized for changing his positions to appeal to social conservatives voting in Republican primaries. In a nationally broadcast interview yesterday, he also had to explain his switch to a conservative stance on abortion and why he once voted for Democrats in Massachusetts primaries.

Spokesman Kevin Madden said Romney did not join the NRA just to court gun owners, who are considered a force in Republican primary politics.

“He joined the NRA because, like millions of Americans, he supports the group’s advocacy of the Second Amendment and its commitment to education programs promoting the safe use of firearms by law-abiding gun owners,” Madden said.

Asked why Romney joined only a few months before declaring his candidacy, Madden said: “I would argue not many Americans care when you join, but why you join, and I think I’ve made that clear.”

Generally agree. I was going to vote for Fred. Even after he dropped out. Damn it. But, McPain ain’t one of us. Neither is Huck. Mitt ain’t my first choice. BUT, a protest vote for Ron, or Fred is only gonna get us McPain. Urrrrrp!

You’re right. It all comes down to California. If Mitt can win there...it will at least slow down the McCain train long enough for conservatives to come to their senses...and more importantly...for Huckabee to drop out.

"I think right now Romney probably -- as the campaign has coalesced and as the campaign has progressing on down the highway -- I think the one candidate of the three still out there on our side ... in saying who more closely embodies all three legs of this conservative stool, you'd have to say that it's Mitt Romney. There's actually no choice in the matter. It certainly isn't Senator McCain."

Great message! Here is a Freeper friend who voted for Mitt Romney here in Florida. We didn’t quite make it happen, so I am counting on CA to show the MSM and the liberals that they can not “pick” a loser for us to nominate! GO MITT!

Look, I’m in a pretty jaded mood right now. Huckabee grated on me, now I wouldn’t be at all offended if he gets nominated. Hell, I still don’t know what to think of Romney (read: his “flip-flopping”) but we have to man up here and destroy McCain once and for all.

So basically Californians, I don’t care who you vote for among the GOP, just make damn sure it’s not McCain, because if he gets nominated, I’ll pack up all my stuff in boxes, get a wooden boat and float my way to the Cayman Islands or something. And you think I’m kidding...

Mit is a liar. Took him half a century to figure out killing babies before they are born is not good. Either he is a liar or a very slow learner.

McCain is too old. His advisors will push him all over the place.

Huckabee loves those illegals.

None of ‘em are going to stop nafta, or get America producing things again.

Ron Paul blames America first, otherwise he would be good, but that is a big otherwise.

Slim Pickins for President

I won't go willingly when McCain and his Gang of 14 plan their new attempts to shove amnesty down our throats. They'll have to take this Californian kicking and screaming...I'll definitely be voting Mitt tomorrow.

A good post. Thanks for your efforts.

Whatever his past positions, Romney is now running as a conservative. He has a fairly good chance of winning the general election. McCain is not a conservative, he is too old, and he behaves like a nutcase. He is simply not fit to be president. Huckabee and Paul have absolutely no chance of winning the general election.

Romney is not a perfect candidate, but he is easily the best choice we have left. He might well turn out to be a great conservative president.

Vote for Romney.

Mitt might not be perfect, but he's head-and-shoulders better than the Republican alternatives (Huckabee and Paul)...

... and our Republic would have difficulty surviving in its current form under the presidency of any of the Democrats currently running (Clinton, Obama, and McCain).

My absentee ballot has already been cast for Mitt.

Hopefully, it has lots of company.
