Mitt Romney was asked about the assault weapons ban on Meet the Press on December 16, 2007.
"I would have supported the original assault weapon ban," Romney said. "I signed an assault weapon ban in Massachusetts governor because it provided for a relaxation of licensing requirements for gun owners in Massachusetts, which was a big plus."
Asked Tim Russert: "So the assault ban that expired here because Congress didn’t act on it, you would support?"
"Just as the president said, he would have, he would have signed that bill if it came to his desk, and so would have I," said Romney.
In the last few hours, Romney contradicted that in a podcast interview with Glenn Reynolds and Helen Smith of Instapundit fame.
"I know that a lot of the gun rights folks aren’t sure about your position on gun rights," asked Smith. "Would you pledge to veto any new gun control bills that come across your desk as President?"
"Yeah," Romney said. "Yeah, I don’t support any gun control legislation, the effort for a new assault weapons ban, with a ban on semi-automatic weapons, is something I would oppose. There’s no new legislation that I’m aware of or have heard of that I would support. In regards to guns, I think we have enough legislation and should enforce the laws as they exist. I was pleased that when I ran for Governor, I received the endorsement of the NRA and I hope to receive their support now."
In addition to that apparent flip flop, it should be noted that the NRA did NOT endorse Romney when he ran for governor, as his campaign acknowledged when he said it last December.
This is a rank untruth Mr. Romney continues to peddle.
Said Mr. Reynolds: "I'm beginning to question his sincerity."

Romney Claims NRA Endorsement He Didn’t Receive
Maybe it was the pressure of the moment. Being under the Tim Russert spotlight can get to anyone. Under Russert’s grilling about guns on this morning’s “Meet the Press,” former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney claimed an endorsement he’d never won.
...”I also was pleased to have the support of the NRA when I ran for governor. I sought it, I seek it now. I’d love to have their support.”
...”I told you what my position was, and what I, what I did as governor; the fact that I received the endorsement of the NRA.”
The problem?
He was never endorsed by the NRA, and didn’t have their official support during his 2002 gubernatorial campaign. The NRA declined to endorse in that race, as was acknowledged by Romney’s spokesman this morning.
“The NRA did not endorse in the 2002 campaign,” said spokesman Kevin Madden, when asked about Romney’s comments.

Why does the article misquote Romney and say he said “endorse”, when your quote says “the support”?
Romney has lied and flip flopped so often that I don’t trust him in the slightest. I believe he’ll sign any gun control measure that comes across his desk and sell out gun owners. I cannot in good conscience vote for the man.
Don't forget how much he loves the 1st Amendment as well.

But wait. No doubt you can provide a lengthy discourse on the newly-revised meaning of the English words “endorse” and “support” according to the Romney Dictionary of the English Language (Abridged).

This whole sentence is an out right lie. And you repeating it shows how low the McCain people will stoop.
Org, I understand it’s difficult to defend Romney’s left-wing record, followed by his serial flip-flopping on multiple issues, and his pattern of making statements which require his staff to go around after him admitting to the news media that what he just said was false.
But try to retain just a touch of dignity, will you? Please demonstrate at least some minimal ability to discuss the substantive content of the posts without immediately (1) attacking anybody who dares post something critical of Flip or (2) running for the McCain/black helicopter conspiracy theories.
John McCain has already abridged one of our Constitutional rights. Who’s to say the 2nd Amendment in’t next on his list?
Only person lying was Jack Tapper over at ABC. The quote is wrong. He changed Romney's words. "Support" doesn't even sound like "endorsed" and yes they do have different meanings, thus why Tapper had to change the word from "support" to "endorse" in order to fly that Romney lied.

The header of the article is about guns and the statement about guns is a lie. What you wish to add is up to you the other statement is old news and is thrown to try to cover up the dishonesty of the first post. The whole think about assault weapons is nothing but a low blow lie by the McCain supporters.
Thanks for posting this. Everyone who’s honest knows that Flip is a liar, but I thought he would be a little more careful about lying about the NRA supporting him again. Perhaps it’s some kind of a disease he has, you know, like maybe he can’t help himself. Or, as JR often says, “Not his fault. The liberals made him do it. ®” ;^)

Actually, death, I was referring to Romney’s record of endorsing Roe, abortion on demand, gays in the military, Kennedy’s federal “gay rights” legislation, homosexual Scoutmasters, gun control, opposing a Marriage Protection Amendment to his state constitution, voting in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary, dissing Ronald Reagan and Jesse Helms, being endorsed by the homosexual Log Cabin Republicans and the Majority for Choice PAC, etc., etc., etc.
That left-wing record.
None of which raised my taxes. Why did McCain oppose Bush’s tax cuts? Also, why does McCain believe that the terrorists at Gitmo should have access to the U.S. courts?
No clue. I don’t support McCain, who opposes a Marriage Protection Amendment, supports federal funding of embryonic stem cell research (the destruction of human life), and believes it should be criminal for citizen organizations to tell their supporters the truth about politicians’ records.
As the LA Times reported over a year ago, I was invited to meet McCain and refused so long as he opposes constitutionally protecting marriage.
All that said, I trust him more than I do Mitt Romney. I don’t believe much of anything Romney says, except of course that he’s the candidate of “change” (on abortion, some of the homosexual agenda, multiple other issues).
As an NRA man I researched NRA’s archive history of McCain. He gave us McCain-Feingold law that cut off NRA free speech; he gave us McCain-Reed law that closed the gun show “loophole”; and...oh yes...he was..is?... a big supporter of the Federal Assault firearms ban.
These are facts guy...not misstatements.

Romney also supports the federal Assault Weapons Ban and the Brady Bill.
