Berkeley is really sorry. It turns out that it didn't want to pick a fight with the Marines. More precisely, it turns out that it didn't want to be seen as picking a fight with the Marines, because all the right-wing zanies in the blogo-radio-sphere will have something to rant about. And they need ammunition just now.
It's a bad season for the right wing. None of the candidates left standing adheres to the conservative orthodox line in every matter. The right-wingers are realizing that there are lots of Latinos who vote, and a nice anti-immigration rally will not play with them. Even those who are concerned with leaky borders are put off by the vitriolic rhetoric. Small-tent Republicanism doesn't really have a future.
Plus, there are a lot of evangelicals who think that poverty and environmentalism are appropriate issues for Christians to care about. They have a genuine desire and feel an obligation to help the least fortunate among us and to be good stewards of the earth.
Christians adhering to Christian doctrine; that's not what Karl Rove had in mind at all. Karl Rove was a "being rich is good for you and poor people lack virtue" Christian. It's a comforting gospel for the comfortable. Just shut your eyes and vote Republican.
And yet, it's not playing in Peoria. It had its chance, and oh, my, look where it got us. Have you checked out the president's proposed budget? Have you considered that maybe printing money will not get us out of this hole? They're printing money in Zimbabwe, and toilet paper costs $417 a roll. Instant karma is going to get you. Really, it is.
But I was writing about Berkeley, which is being silly. Not that "Berkeley" is a single entity - far, Lord knows,

Was anyone able to make sense of this incoherent, poorly written article? I can’t even tell if it is a hit piece or not.
San Francisco Values are laughing at Berkeley Values.
We needed a warning statement after the title: GAG ALERT
I don't think the word paradigm is in vogue anymore. This is a senseless, rambling, incoherent article that fails to make a point.
Cannabis will cause that effect.
For those of you that missed the point, I’ll quote it....
“Protest is great, but I think everyone should be required to feed the meter.”
Communism will cause that effect! Forget the students at CAL. Berkeley is a city of Boomers from other parts of the country, most often New York, a city of wealthy lawyers, Jewish divorcees, New Age space cadets, Volvo, and now Pious driving community college instructors, Fidel worshippers, dying former Stalinists, still unrepentant, a few famous folks like Michael Chabon and Rita Moreno, who did I miss? A large Jewish population, dwindling black population.
If I were Gordon Lightfoot, I’d sue.
Jon Carroll: another over-educated dope.
There is no sense to be made in this vitriolic tantrum being thrown by Jon Carroll. The only obvious take on this poorly written “expose”(?) is that he hates right wingers.
He has to spell his name Jon so he can remember how to spell it-metro...
No, but Berkeley must have received the letter that rich guy wrote them esentially saying he will shut them down if they continue with their idiotic behavior against the Marines.
Is this Jon Carroll creature Mark Morford’s bum-boy?

Berkeley to Marine Corps: You’re Not Welcome
BERKELEY, Calif. Local officials in this liberal city say it’s time for
the U.S. Marines to move out. The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting
station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”
The measure passed this week by a vote of 8-1.

Now check this out, here is a letter a businessman wrote to the Mayor of
Berkeley. Is this a great country or what?
Dear Mayor Bates,
In that you and your city have chosen to gravely insult the brave men and
women, who have indeed bought you that right with their blood, I am informing you that my company
will no longer do business with any of our current suppliers located in the Berkeley,
California metro area.
In that my company is in international resort real estate development, and
do business with and am associated with, developers and investors worldwide, I am informing all of
my contacts, associates and patrons that we will no longer do any business of any sort with anyone
living in the Berkeley area.
In that we/MDG Resorts are currently building a state of the art mega-yacht
marina, all of the suppliers of Marina equipment, all owners of Yachts, all suppliers of Yacht
materials & supplies, all yacht brokers and all tangential yacht business purveyors will likewise be
informed that we will not do any business whatsoever with anyone from the Berkeley area.
Likewise all suppliers of building materials, both interior and exterior,
currently associated with any of our several resort developments (Brisamar 300+ villas and 200+ condos:
Porto Hussong, www.portohussong.com 500+ condos, 180 slip mega-yacht marina) both of which
I might add have international recognition by virtue of glowing reports in Robb Report, Wall
Street Journal, Yacht World, Forbes.
I will likewise inform all of our investors, most of whom are very wealthy
yacht owners, casino owners, high net worth international businessmen, of our decision to essentially
boycott all products and providers located in, or associated with in any way whatsoever, Berkeley,
Ca.
Trust me when I say that having been in the real estate development business for over 35 years, our
list of contacts and associates is long and very, very impressive. We, and I personally, are going to
recomend that they ALL along with us boycott your city, its purveyors, suppliers, and businesses and
CHARITIES of every kind.
You have every right to choose to take the obnoxious anti-military stance
you have taken, and as stated, that right was bought for you with the blood of better men than you.
I too have every right to do all that I can to insure that your city suffers consequences arising
from that obnoxious, sickening stance.
Cordially,

“being rich is good for you and poor people lack virtue” -
Jon: You have to work really hard to be this much of a moronic schmuck. You know and understand nothing.
“It’s a bad season for the right wing. Small-tent Republicanism doesn’t really have a future.”
I just love it when liberals tell conservatives who they are.

Yes, us right-wingers must be a dying breed if we can bring this shameful city and its “leaders” to a switcheroo ASAP with a few thousand angry emails, calls and economic boycotts.
Hey Jon Boy, reports of our premature demise are greatly exaggerated. Now go back to your little lily-white enclave and take a few hits.
The real difficulty in my view is that the city council has, through the granting of favoritism to Code Pink, actually instigated violence and confrontation. That's fine if the target is politically correct (the Nazis knew all about that) but not so good if someone actually ends up getting hurt - on either side. Liability lawyers don't recognize fellow travelers, and the deep pockets for this one are sitting in city hall.
It won't be forgotten. The antiwar types desperately wanted a Vietnam and instead are attempting to recreate the viciousness of the Vietnam-era antiwar movement without a single one of its redeeming qualities (if there were any, which is questionable). But it's a different world these days, and pushback won't be waiting a decade this time.
