Jail politicians who ignore climate science: Suzuki

Didn't mean it literally says scientist's spokesperson

David Suzuki has called for political leaders to be thrown in jail for ignoring the science behind climate change.

At a Montreal conference last Thursday, the prominent scientist, broadcaster and Order of Canada recipient exhorted a packed house of 600 to hold politicians legally accountable for what he called an intergenerational crime. Though a spokesman said yesterday the call for imprisonment was not meant to be taken literally, Dr. Suzuki reportedly made similar remarks in an address at the University of Toronto last month.

The proposal has lit up many conservative blogs since it was first reported by the McGill Daily on Monday.

Addressing the McGill Business Conference on Sustainability, hosted by the Faculty of Management, Dr. Suzuki's wide-ranging speech warned against favouring the economy to the detriment of the ecology -- the tarsands in Northern Alberta being his prime example.

"You have lived your entire lives in a completely unsustainable period," he told students and fans. "You all think growth and [climate] change is normal. It's not."

Toward the end of his speech, Dr. Suzuki said that "we can no longer tolerate what's going on in Ottawa and Edmonton" and then encouraged attendees to hold politicians to a greater green standard.

"What I would challenge you to do is to put a lot of effort into trying to see whether there's a legal way of throwing our so-called leaders into jail because what they're doing is a criminal act," said Dr. Suzuki, a former board member of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

"It's an intergenerational crime in the face of all the knowledge and science from over 20 years."

The statement elicited rounds of applause.

Jail politicians who don’t factor a couple second order polynomials and multiply a couple 4X4 matrices before breakfast. Makes as much sense.

"You all think growth and [climate] change is normal. It's not."

This is the statement of the century from "progressive environmentalists".

Yet more evidence of the lack of tolerance of the envirowhackos and why their so-called “facts and evidence” should be taken with a very large grain of salt.

And they wonder why people don’t want to believe them or support their alleged “solutions” to global warming.

Interesting piece, liked this part;

“He has stopped vacationing overseas and taken to “clustering” his speaking engagements together to reduce his carbon footprint. He would prefer, he says, to appear solely by video conference.

In 2007, Suzuki made a cross-country tour in a diesel bus, speaking to Canadians about climate change and urging compliance with the Kyoto Accord. Gold Standard carbon offsets were purchased by the David Suzuki Foundation for all bus travel and tour activities. The Foundation’s “David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge” and “David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge for Kids” suggest simple steps people can take to protect nature and improve their quality of life. Suzuki’s spokesman said he used the diesel bus because using biodiesel would have voided the bus’ warranty.

Usually, when a person ignores a physical law, he does not have to be reminded by temporal authorities. However, without debate, science becomes Lysenkoism.

Somewhere I read that the little nutball has 5 or 6 kids. If he was so worried about sustainability and his carbon footprint why didn't he get himself neutered?

If there was actually any real science behing global warming, we would be taking action like this:

Qattara Depression

If Greenland melted down completely, 88% of the excess water produced could be contained by flooding the uninhabited Qatarra Depression in northwest Egypt, producing thousands of miles of valuable lakefront property, generating electrical power as water flowed from the Medditerranean to the depression and potentially turning much of the surrounding Sahara Desert into arable land.

It took Greenland 18,000 years to accumulate as much ice as it has now. How long do you think it will take it to melt?

His views are sincere and the public espousal of them will spread until there are real attempts to do it, first in Canada where they will succeed the next time the Liberals take over, which probably won’t be long. Conservatives up there tend to be politically clumsy and Liberals are corrupt enough to buy a lot of votes and time.

It looks like there's already a song out on MP3: "David Suzuki is a Fascist."

BTW, who will enforce this policy in the US? Bill Nye, the Science Guy?

Most of the left already believes he has the right idea. He opened the subject and I bet we hear it more and more from our own left. It will eventually result in huge lawsuits against scientists who don’t tow the line and will result in scientists falling into that line to avoid the expenses of the lawsuits that they have to pay even if they win. An awful lot of the effective censorship in this country could be shut down just by going nationally to a loser-pays-court-costs system for lawsuits.
