Music Cannot Change the World, Says Neil Young
Breitbard ^ | AFP

Canadian folk rock legend Neil Young said he has lost all hope that music can change the world, as he presented a documentary about his 2006 anti-war concert tour at the Berlin film festival on Friday.

"I know that the time when music could change the world is past. I really doubt that a single song can make a difference. It is a reality," Young told reporters.

"I don't think the tour had any impact on voters."

But the silver-haired frontman of the sixties supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young nonetheless dealt US President George W. Bush a stinging, back-handed insult and said his own "naive" urge to make people think remains intact.

"What is wrong with George Bush? That would take a really long time. Let's talk about what is right with him, it is a much shorter answer.

Is THAT what he’s been up to all this time?

Changing the World?

“Hey, how well did that work out for ya, Neil?”
LOL!

What about the thousands of tons of carbon emitted from your mega-concerts over 30 years? That would count as a “change” in the world, wouldn’t it?

It hasn’t been 1968 for a long time, Neil. Welcome to adulthood.

lyrics to Cortez the Killer, extolling the virtues of child sacrifice, etc.

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on. [oh, how nice!]

Hate was just a legend [of course not]
And war was never known [nope, never]
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still cant do today. [really?]

And I know shes living there
And she loves me to this day
I still cant remember when
Or how I lost my way. [what does this have to do with romanticising Montezuma? i think it was all the acid and bong hits, Neil..... ]

Does this mean I should delete “We Are The World” from my cell phone ring tones?

That’s right, Neil. Forget about changing the world and just get the boys from Crazy Horse together, plug your ‘53 Gibson Les Paul into your ‘59 (tweed) Fender Deluxe, dime the volume knob, and jam “Down By the River,” “Powderfinger,” and “My My Hey Hey” until the cows come home.

I can’t believe nobody’s posted this yet. It should be mandatory every time Neil Young opens his mouth (and I’m not a fan of Alabama):

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the Southland
I miss Alabamy once again
And I think its a sin, yes

Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

Young's a real weird guy politically/musically.

I remember him, back in the 80s, saying that he could see voting for Reagan because "we need to keep America strong," and right after 9/11 he recorded "Let's Roll," which was as close to a "pro war" anthem as I've ever heard from a rock singer:

No one has the answer,
But one thing is true,
You've got to turn on evil,
When it's coming after you,
You've gota face it down,
And when it tries to hide,
You've gota go in after it,
And never be denied,
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Let's not let our children,
Grow up fearfull in there youth.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

But then, after the war started, he want all "war is evil" and "impeach Bush" again.

Personally, I think the poor guy just fried his brain with drugs so bad in the past that he can't make up his mind from one day to another.

Too bad. I do like a lot of his music.
