Hispanic voters years-long ties to Bill Clinton could clinch the Democratic Partys nomination for his wife Hillary, political analysts say.
On Super Tuesday, Clinton won 64 percent of Latino votes to 34 percent for Barack Obama, exit polls indicated.
In California, Clinton did even better, polling 67 percent among Latinos to 29 percent for Obama. Latino voters made up 30 percent of the Democratic electorate, nearly double their representation four years ago.
Hillary Clinton would not have won had it not been for the margin that Latinos gave her here, Octavio Pescador, a political analyst at the University of California-Los Angeles, told MSNBC.
Clinton took 68 percent of the Latino vote in New Jersey, winning with 54 percent of the overall vote. In New Mexico, Clintons narrow 49 percent-to-48 percent lead over Obama was aided by her 56 percent support among Latino voters.
Even in Obamas home state of Illinois, which he won with 65 percent of the vote, Latinos split their support, choosing Obama by only 50 percent to 49 percent.
In exit polls, Latino Democrats gave Obama high marks for his leadership qualities and the freshness of his ideas, but even though they said they would back him in the general election should he win the Democratic nomination, they gave their votes in the primaries and caucuses to Clinton, MSNBC reported.
Hillary had a 15-year head start on Obama in cultivating support in Latino communities due to the popularity of her husband, said Roberto Suro, a professor at the University of Southern California and former director of the Pew Hispanic Center.
Clinton also benefitted early on by lining up endorsements from a number of influential Latino figures, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Henry Cisneros, who as housing secretary was the first Latino Cabinet member.
All that could add up to trouble for Obama in Texas, whose primary is March 4. Latinos comprise a third of the states voters.
How about Hillarys magic negro problem?
It all adds up to amnesty for illegal aliens, and more votes for democrats.
If Obama did beat Hillary, his relative weakness amongst Hispanics, along with longstanding tensions between blacks and Hispanics, will work in McCain’s favor. Similarly, if Obama loses, black support of Hillary will probably suffer to some extent.
There is no guarantee that McCain will not try to pass an amnesty bill if elected. Whether conservatives in Congress will have enough gumption to stop him is an open question.
Actually, Latinos and blacks are at each other’s throats.
Exactly. Latino immigrants tend to have Archie Bunker-style opinions of blacks. It's one of the MSM's many Great Unspoken Truths of American life in 2008.
“Latino immigrants tend to have Archie Bunker-style opinions of blacks. It’s one of the MSM’s many Great Unspoken Truths of American life in 2008.”
And they also have Jesse Jackson-style opinions of non-hispanic whites.
And that is just among a tolerant minority. Most are harsher. In my experience, I have not met many immigrants (including black immigrants) of any nationality who liked American blacks. It always surprises me because the propoganda is that every one else on the planet is so much more tolerant than white Americans.
I think we will have another civil war in this country by 2030.
While that is true, it is typical of the democrats to divide the populus into fragmented groups. The dems do recognize though that eventually, absent some drastic measures toward legal or illegal aliens, Latinos will far surpass the black population in the country. They expect most of those future voters will vote democrat, and anticipate blacks are likely to stay in the fold for a long time.
As for McCain, his teaming up with the likes of Edwards, Lieberman, Kennedy and Feingold on a number of key bills, does not inspire confidence for him to cut a more conservative path if elected to occupy the White House.
Probably the best case for Obama is that if he goofs up as prez. he will be easier to get rid of than hilary or McCain. If more people with oaths of office would start to take them seriously, we wouldn’t have to worry about any of the turdbuckets.
A bunch of Hispanics would sit on their hands or vote for McCain rather than support Obama.
Were these the percentage of legal Hispanics and illegal aliens voting?
If Hillary wins, she will lose the Black vote (angry Blacks will stay home in November), and split the Mexican vote with Juan McCain. Hillary only has a lock the "trailer trash" women vote.
If McCain were elected, we'd be fighting him on half the issues. If Hillary were elected, we'd be fighting her on ALL the issues.
McCain is my last choice for the nomination. But, when it comes to November, I'll vote for him rather than stay at home and allow Hillary of Obama into the White House.
Spoken like a true Republican partisan.
Would it be offensive to suggest you rather work to rid the Republican Party of McCain prior to the nominating convention in September?
You’d think they’d be united against whitey. Never really understood it.
Now, if I were conspiratorially minded, I'd say the proper plan is to A) somehow induce McQueeg to name a conservative as his VP, then B) win the election, then C) somehow arrange for him to drop dead @ 6pm, 20 January 2009.
However, that's not terribly realistic, is it?
Of course McCain will try to pass a huge amnesty bill. He voted against barring gang members and terrorists. Shows how much he wants more illegals here. He wants the border to remain open. Anyone who says McCain is great for war on terror is confused.
