Open House seat, crime measures, return Ore. politician to stage

Turns out, rumors of Kevin Mannix's political demise may have been greatly exaggerated.

Less than two years ago, a downcast Mannix said he had no plans to seek public office again after Republican voters rejected his bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination and chose rival Ron Saxton for the 2006 governor's race.

But now he's back in a big way and basking in the spotlight, weighing a possible run for Oregon attorney general or for a congressional seat, while bargaining with state lawmakers over legislation on criminal sentences for drug dealing and property crime.

Mannix found himself back in the thick of things with last week's bombshell announcement from Democratic U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley that she won't seek re-election.

It was a development that could give Mannix a shot at winning public office again after several defeats in races for statewide office.

"There are a lot of people calling and encouraging me to run," said Mannix, a former state lawmaker who has demonstrated an ability over the years to stir the pot on crime and social issues.

Mannix makes it clear he is intrigued by the possibility of running for Hooley's congressional seat in a district where Republicans have a slight voter registration edge over Democrats, supporting President Bush over John Kerry in 2004 by a narrow margin.

"It's a short-fuse situation," he said, referring to the state's March 11 candidate filing deadline, "but there is certainly still time to do what needs to be done" to get a campaign up and running.

Kevin Mannix would be a strong candidate, it appears. And it sounds like he’s more likely than not to run.

He oughta go after RINO Gordon Smith's Senate seat.

I'd support him

"Mannix would have a head start, simply because people know who he is,"

Yeah. He's the guy who keeps losing elections. Does he even live in the district or will he carpetbag it?

He lives in the district, and he carried it in the last three elections he was a candidate in.

In 2002, he was very nearly elected Governor, losing only because a Libertarian siphoned off 5% of the vote. In 2000, narrowly lost the race for state AG, with a Libertarian winning 4%, possibly (but not certainly) tipping that race to his opponent, as well.

Mannix would be great to replace Hooley.

I am so happy she is going, going, going, gone!

Let him do this first. Then he can go after Smith when Smith comes up again. But not this year.

Smith could be finished, IMO. Dems will take his seat because Frohnmeyer is running as a spoiler.

Mannix is a slimeball. Don’t trust that one as far as you can throw him.

Frohnmeyer is a Dorchester Republican in the mold of Packwood, a “moderate” by the definition of the press, or by our definition a leftist.

Mannix is a former Democrat who is a social authoritarian. A living, breathing example of the caricature of conservatism the press loves to parade before the viewers.

Either would be unacceptable, IMHO, in the US Senate. For all of those bad laws that won’t pass in a narrow Democrat majority without Republican votes (and none have), either could be relied upon to side with the Dems.

That effect would be somewhat diluted in the US house, and if I were in the district I could hold my nose and mark the spot for Mannix.
