LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Actor Roy Scheider, the star of such films as "Jaws" and "All That Jazz," died Sunday at 75 in Little Rock, Ark., his wife told The New York Times.

Scheider, who lived in Sag Harbor, N.Y., died of complications from a staph infection, Brenda Scheider told the newspaper. Scheider had suffered from multiple myeloma.

Scheider came to prominence in such '70s films as "Klute" and "The French Connection" -- for which he earned an Oscar nomination as Buddy Russo, the partner of police Detective Popeye Doyle, played by Gene Hackman.

Scheider may have been best known as the resort town police chief in the 1975 blockbuster "Jaws."

Scheider was born in 1932 in Orange, N.J. He earned a history degree from Franklin and Marshall College and then served three years in the U.S. Air Force

Roy was also in 2010 : sequel to 2001. He was always good and even his TV show was worth watching for fun and fantasy.

CNN is saying he led a protest of the US troops in Iraq? I don’t think I liked him much.

I believe he took part, along with 125,000 others!....lol

Hardly ‘leading’. And as an American and an ex-veteran, isnt that his free right?.

Not to get off topic here, but I caught a “Bat Masterson” marathon on the Western Channel the other day with ol’ Gene Barry. That was a great show.

Here's what it said:

He participated in rallies protesting U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists

Yes, I read it too.

Participating isnt leading, which is what you said.

Scheider was also politically active. He participated in rallies protesting U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists

So what?.

The man served his country. If anyone earned a right to disagree and protest, its him.

JOWLY “Jaws” star Roy Scheider staged a silly peace protest in the Hamptons the other day, lying down in the middle of Montauk Highway pretending to be a casualty of war.

Scheider, who lives in the Hamptons year-round, headed up a contingent of 75 peaceniks who staged a mock funeral procession down the middle of Route 27 in Sagaponack Tuesday morning, causing a brief traffic jam but mostly confusion in the resort community, where the off-season is usually uneventful.

Scheider and friends dressed in all black and carried white coffins bearing anti-war slogans, led by a veiled woman cradling a folded American flag. Then someone played “Taps” while they lay down “dead” beside their caskets, causing a 45-minute traffic jam.

“This war is insane,” Scheider told the Southampton Press about his actions. “Bush is doing everything he can to make you look unpatriotic if you disagree with him. This is fear-mongering. Now I am really afraid of terrorism. I wasn’t before [Bush’s address].”

Sag Harbor resident Dan Steiger, who organized the protest, was more vocal. “We do not want to bury Iraqi and American youth. We want to bury the cynicism, racism, fear and attempts at world empire on the part of this U.S. administration.”

Dang!

I’ve always been a fan of Mr. Scheider. Superb character actor who has never turned in a bad performance and has never taken himself too seriously.

First caught my eye as Gene Hackman’s partner in ‘The French Connection’, possibly the best ‘Partner’ (Not ‘Buddy’) films ever made. From there, he’s only traveled upward.

He will be sorely missed.

Jack.

Loved him as an actor, just loved him. The little moments in Jaws in particular stick with me: Worn out Chief Brody at the dinner table as his son mimics him; and Brodytaking a subtle peek at his small appendectomy scar as Dreyfuss and Shaw are one-upping each other with scar stories.

God rest his soul.
