The Democratic presidential race is now between a seemingly unstoppable force and an apparently immovable object.
Hillary Clinton is retrenching behind what her advisers call a demographic brick wall in Ohio and Texas believing that Barack Obamas momentum will be brought to a shuddering halt next month by the blue collar and Latino voters who have elsewhere remained largely loyal to her.
But Mr Obama still surges forward, putting his faith in the fierce urgency of now helping him to vault over the crucial elections on March 4, when 444 delegates are at stake, in the same way that he has already defied the laws of political campaigning.
Something, or someone, has to give. And eyes are turning to the Democratic leadership comprised of 796 super-delegates, one fifth of the total, who may yet act as a referee stopping this fight before it reaches the presidential nomination convention in August.
The party Establishment is not going to turn its back on a candidate who is generating this tremendous excitement and bringing all these new voters into the political process, said a source close to her.
Maybe, but she carries a big stick among the superdelegates.
Does anyone think the Clintons and their cadres will allow her to be stopped?
We need to see what the Clintons do behind the scenes with the super delegates. They will twist arms, and fight to get the Florida and Michigan delegates to be allowed at the Dem. convention. And, they will fight to use the results of the non-binding primaries in Fla. and Mich. as the basis for those delegates, because Hillary “won” those non-binding elections.
Even with Barack’s momentum, we know the Clintons will use every trick up their sleeves.
“Make book on it: no matter who wins the voting, Mrs. Clinton will be the nominee.” ~ Rush 02/12/2008
I think this is bigger than the Clintons at this point. Last democratic primary in Virginia drew 8% voter participation-today they expect 30-40%. With Obama bringing this many people to polls, that changes things. The establishment isn’t going to deny the guy if he gets more votes and delegates than Hillary.
I heard Rush when he said that. I think he’s wrong. See my previous post for my reasons.
There can only be one queen bee.
Well, who did the Botox grandma vote for in the California primary?????????
He’s “what’s happening NOW.”
Have to scoot for a couple hours. Opine away...
I think the Clintons have set up the Democratic nomination process to suit their needs and to see that he doesn’t get more delegates than Hillary, regardless of the votes. They will not go down without a fight, that is, a nuclear war, and it won’t be pretty if that happens.
All the talk about superdelegates, I’m starting to wonder if the fix is in, and the insiders know it. There’s an undercurrent in the comments of the tv pundits, suggesting that even if Obama wins more votes, Clinton will still prevail because the superdelegates will rescue her.
And they do seem to anticipate that Obama will win more votes.
Rush is right. 800 of those delegates to the convention are party officials.
How many FBI files do you think Hillary and Bill have on them. It was nice to have the goods on Republican party officials, but it was a mandatory that the Clintons have the goods on Democrats.
They will either give the nomination to Hillary or there will be a huge increase in the number of former Democratic party officials serving time in our prison system.
Hillary will win Ohio and Texas as well as Pennsylvania. There is no way that white working class Democrats will vote for Obama. It will not happen.
With respect, sounds to me you’ve given the Clinton’s more power than they really have. Yes, they’ve got power but not that much. Indeed, many in the Dem Establishment do not wish to see them back at 1600 Pennsylvania.
cheers!
This halfrican Marxist won't know what to do if he get the nod, he will be a cliche and laughingstock by summer time.
And if he doesn't get it, all hell breaks loose at the convention.
There’s also a lot of speculation that Clinton might be able to recapture the momentum, yet nobody puts forth a plausible way to do so. Only Obama can trip up Obama at this point.
Clinton’s brick wall was supposed to be Super Tuesday. Didn’t happen.
