Hockey thinks green, goes red

David Suzuki's recent suggestion that politicians who fail to march in his environmental crusade should be imprisoned has inevitably attracted much comment. Although he subsequently declared that his remarks should not be taken literally, they raise ever-recurring questions over Dr. Suzuki's objectivity, and whether those who follow him really comprehend his core beliefs, and their political implications.

One unlikely group of recent converts to Suzuki-ism is the National Hockey League Players Association, NHLPA, whose members are hardly known for their hairshirt lifestyles. Nevertheless, a large number of players have -- at Dr. Suzuki's behest -- secured places for themselves in the environmental Hall of Fame by purchasing "carbon offsets"...

Dr. Suzuki spotted a strategic opportunity and before long the two had met up and Mr. Ference -- who now plays for the Boston Bruins -- had been persuaded not merely to help fight global warming, but to drag all his confreres into the painless penalty box of carbon offsets.

Buying carbon offsets has been compared to the Renaissance Catholic Church's corrupt practice of flogging religious indulgences, that is, selling entry to the Pearly Gates. It was a wonderful scam, since nobody would ever return to ask for their money back.

Buying carbon offsets produces more immediate personal benefits: it boosts feelings -- albeit delusive -- that one is "doing something," and thus placing oneself above the carbon-feckless masses.

However, their broader -- and less recognized -- purpose is to entrench the perspective of sustainable development, which amounts to the greatest threat to freedom since the rise of Communism.

It's a lot more fun to laugh at Al Gore. The only guy on earth who can't be considered as jumping the shark, because he's always been totally absurd.
Maybe that's because we Americans almost elected the guy president.
David Suzuki on the other hand has been waging the war against the evils of humanity for his entire life. I remember way before cable TV, when alternative programming meant channel 9 from Windsor, CBC.
Beginning somewhere in the 1970's I believe he started the tradition of ending all thoughts, statements, and TV shows with the prayer-like admonishment that mankind is to blame.
Another guy who just hovers there above the shark, for something like the past 30 years.

David, here is another comment for you: Environment wackos who fail to kiss my *ss should receive the death penalty.

LOL, I see your point, yet anthropogenic photographic evidence suggests otherwise:

Mr. Ference had reportedly developed environmental concerns when he tasted gasoline in the water while surfing in California. His reported reaction was "like, man, this is wrong."

Every sport has it's air heads. Andrew is on of ours!

Hockey Ping!

Too bad Probie or Twister aren't around to give young Ference the tune-up he so richly deserves.

Freep mail/ping airborne or Hat-Trick or G8 Diplomat if you want on or off the Hockey Ping List.

Wasn’t Suzuki exposed as a fraud along the lines of the Goreacle (big, energy consuming house; constant use of private jets; etc.)?

This thinking of sending those to jail who disagree with the church of global warming reminds me of 16th century Europe where witches were executed for “weather cooking”.

Is there are rebuttal to the old “indulgence” scam trope? I’m a Protestant but I get tired of hearing this trotted out all the time. Thanks.
