Who are these Democratic superdelegates? (white- & blue-collar workers - and the unemployed)

Who are these Democratic superdelegates?
Those that may hold the balance in the race include former presidents, the party faithful, white- and blue-collar workers -- and the unemployed.

WASHINGTON -- John Millin, an ophthalmologist, fits people for glasses and performs cataract operations. Debbie Marquez owns a restaurant whose specialty is chicken enchiladas in creamy jalapeño sauce. Christopher Stampolis is looking for a job now that the industrial recycling company where he worked for the last decade closed.

They share one bond -- late this summer, they will help choose the Democratic presidential nominee at the party's national convention in Denver. When they do, they will be among a group whose ballots will count thousands of times more in the process than those of other Democrats who have gone to the polls.

How powerful are superdelegates? In California, 370 regular delegates were allotted based on the votes of more than 4.5 million people in the state's Feb. 5 primary. That means each of California's 66 superdelegates will cast a convention ballot equivalent to a regular delegate picked by more than 12,000 primary voters.

"This is a device to try to reduce the influence of one-person, one-vote," said Craig Holman, a lobbyist for the watchdog group Public Citizen. "It's anti-democratic. It's specifically designed for the purpose of having the insiders . . . have some sort of final decision over who the nominee is going to be, regardless of what the voters want."

Some of the superdelegates are professional politicians; 27 governors are among them, as well as every Democratic member of Congress -- including Rep. William J. Jefferson of Louisiana, indicted last year on corruption charges...

Their formal designation is "unpledged party leader and elected official delegates."

WHOSE SIDE IS HE ON? Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton with Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, a civil rights leader. A report last week that Lewis might abandon Clinton for her rival, Sen. Barack Obama, made national news.

“...including Rep. William J. Jefferson of Louisiana, indicted last year on corruption charges...’

LOL...this is rich! That this bunch of hypocrits hasn’t kicked him out of office yet and still designates him as a “super delegate” says everything one needs to know about the Democrat party.

The other dirty little secret is that the GOP also has its set of elites. The GOP calls them uncommitted delegates, rather than Superdelegates, but their function is essentially the same.

The Dem Superdelegates represent about 27% of the number a Dem candidate needs for the Dem nomination.

The GOP uncommitted delegates represent about 19.5% of the number a GOP candidate needs for the GOP nomination.

The majority of superdelegates are white men.

Nice L.A. times spin, though.

How do the super delegates get to be a super delegate?

Super Delegate sounds like an invention of the Politburo to make some party members more equal than others.

The numbers don’t tell the whole story, though.

Due to the rules of the respective conventions, the Demodog superdelegates are far more influential than those of the GOP.

I think we’re pretty much ALL immune to Chelsea’s “sex appeal.”
