Pawlenty’s a statist, nothing more than a Northern TX Gov Perry.

There are many compelling reasons to consider Palwenty as a running mate. His popularity in his home state definitely helps.

I'd support him for veep to get him out of the statehouse. He has been frighteningly squishy on certain issues such as sucking up to the globull warming crowd. He has been decent on state spending but has hurt conservatives outside the metro area by constant pandering to the ring suburbs. It's hard to drum up support for conservative candidates in my part of the state when they look at the governor essentially ignoring us.

My biggest complaint has been that the costs of government have not changed in Minnesota, they have all been transferred to the local level, and have been switched over to higher fees for various things.

Our state now has every school district voting higher real estate taxes to pay for the same level of education, so keeping the cost of government down here has been illusory.

There is no free lunch.

Pawlenty is unacceptable.

What makes you say that?

McCain will win the South by default. We aren’t crazy about him down here, but no way would Obama or Hillary carry any southern states.

He won’t help McCain carry MN for starters (and it’s not likely to help him anywhere else).

I think Pawlenty has been a subpar Governor and his having moved leftward (as others have cited in this thread) makes him completely unacceptable to Conservatives (not to mention that while he got reelected just barely, the party suffered massive losses on his watch, the loss of all its other statewide offices, a Congressional seat, failure to capture the open Senate seat, loss of the State House of Reps for the first time in a decade).

I’ve cited another poorly-known Governor as a far better choice for VP who has fought strongly for Conservative governance, and that’s Rhode Island’s Don Carcieri (although he’d probably have a negligable impact in New England).

Pawlenty is not that popular. He barely won re-election in 2006 only after his Democratic opponent called a TV reporter a "Republican whore" the weekend before election.

I think it's pretty much a given McCain will choose Charlie Crist or Kay Bailey Hutchinson as his running mate.

"While I’m not a real fan of the Huckster, it seems to me that he would be the one best suited to bring the Conservative Base back to the ticket."

From my point of view we are screwed for the next four years. It is only a matter of degree.

And if he is pig-ignorant stupid enough to choose a Larry Craig type who champions voting rights for rapists and murderers or an even more open borders RINO Senator than he is, he will lose by a substantial margin, and deservedly so.

Or Mark Sanford.

Don Carcieri is a good idea. Others that occured to me are Rob Portman (whose name has been circulating), Judd Gregg, and Christopher Cox (current FEC Chairman).

Charlie Crist may be a good choice in theory, but he’d be a disaster in practice. While he’s been a good steward of the state’s economy, his record on virtually everything else is deplorable, not much better than a DemocRAT.

That’s the first time I’ve heard Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s name mentioned as a possible VEEP. Are you speculating or do you have a source?

Speculating, but I am guessing Hillary will be the Dem nominee and McCain needs the white women vote.

Disaster, perhaps.

But Crist's endorsement was the reason why McCain won Florida.

"He will lose by a substantial margin, and deservedly so."

The ultimate losers are us. While I admire McCain's service he is totally unfit for the job as president. And God help us if Obama or Hillary get there as well.
