Vanity: Congress the Other Electoral Problem

Posted on 02/17/2008 2:10:28 PM PST by Reily

Anybody have a feel for what direction Congress may go? Any possibility that we will recapture Congress? Only capture one house? Which one? My gut feel is it doesn't matter who wins the White House the RAT majorty is likely to incease in both Houses. I would like to be convinced that my gut is wrong!

Lot depends on who heads the Demo ticket. With Hilly negatives, GOP should do better then they might against Obama.

There's a big problem with the Senate races: the Democrats will be defending 12 seats and the Republicans will be defending 23 seats.

Kinda tough to ride McCain’s coattails...now if we had a true conservative running it might generate some enthusiasm...I think the GOP wouldn’t fare well on “Are you smarter than a 5th grader” or smarter than a first term Senator.

My thought as well. Realistically, the one hope we may have is the House, esp. with the Rats capturing so many conservative districts in '06. Time will tell, I guess, but I'd feel a lot better if I felt like we could at least deny the Rats a clean sweep.

First-term Reps are always at risk, especially if they’re in a district where they represent the minority party. Given the unpopular nature of Congress, the “Blue dog Dems” are at definite risk.

If the GOP doesn’t re-discover fiscal responsibility, downsized government, etc then they’re doomed.

In my opinion? None whatsoever.

If it was simply all the same people running again, I’d think we’d do well. People don’t hate Republicans as much as they did in 2006, and the Democrats have done a pretty bad job running the congress. We had at least three seats we lost due to stupidity (DeLay, Foley, and one I can’t remember), all of which we should win back.

But we’ve had a lot of retirements which make things difficult. For example, my district is likely to elect a democrat with Tom Davis retiring. I’m going to work hard to get a good conservative in, but I’m not holding out much hope.

But I still think it could be a wash when it’s all over.

The Senate will be more difficult, especially since we can’t seem to get too many good candidates to run.

We will lose ground in the Senate by 2-4 seats and could hold our ground or even gain a few in the House. You can check realclearpolitics.com for a good source of regular updates on all races. What I like best about them is they combine all polls.

In 2010 our chances will be better, especially if a President Obama or Clinton try to move the country leftward. Then I envision another Republican sweep, just like 1994.

It's looking bleak at this time. Others have pointed out the Senate equation. I agree with losses of 2-4 seats.

The House is going to be brutal too. 28 GOP Congress members quitting. More may be coming. No cash.

Sorry. Things are about to get ugly. They have only themselves to blame.
