>>A good sex life does not lead to a good marriage, but rarely is there a good marriage that doesn’t have a good sex life.<<

Precicely! And I have lived both sides of that. It’s a fact!

“Let’s forget about those pesky 10 Commandments?”

The 10 Commandments (less regarding the Sabbath) are substantially repeated in the Covenent of Noah

You know there are times I miss my Ex Wife. (usually late at night and only for a little while) I do admit the Rev. is probably going to see an increase in the love offering in his church.

I guess what I need is a good FReeper woman to court. All I seem to find in this college town are whacked fem lib rat's. It's enough to put you off completely.

” for those with wives, live as though you had none”...

What are you quoting? I’m not seeing it in 1 Cor 7.

UH, pastor, the Bill Clintons of the world don’t need any more encouragement!!!

You don’t think Bill Clinton would take this to mean he should have sex with his WIFE every day, do you????

And don’t forget the “three sheets” dream. It had a double meaning. Christians cannot murder (or violate any of the other nine commandments) with a clean conscience, but we can enjoy pork and lobster.

The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

So how do you reconcile that with:

for those with wives, live as though you had none

Well, you do have to read it in context:

Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for you to remain as you are. Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.

So if you say "those who have wives should live as they had none", you should also say "those who are happy (should live) as if they were not".

Context.

In versus 1 through 9 he is giving commands to married people answering questions that the Corinthians had written to him about.

In versus 25 to 35 he is giving his opinion on what would cause the least grief to those living through that particular time of persecution in Corinth.

Context.

I don't know about "pesky," but we are "not under the law, but under grace." The Ten Commandments are part of the Mosaic Law, which no longer applies to us as law per se. No, murder and adultery (etc.) are not acceptable, but it's not because of the Mosaic Law; it's because they're contrary to the "law of love."

On the other hand, Christians have no "legal" obligation to keep a sabbath in the Old Testament sense. Periods of rest are a good idea; the commandment sprang from a valid principle, and we're designed so that we function better with periodic rest. But we have no obligation to refrain from work every week from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown, or any other specific day or time.

Heh. This reminds me of the old Dick Van Dyke movie where the town was challenged to quit smoking and the plan was to have sex every time there was an urge for a cigarette.

Well, a “friend of mine” and his wife were being counseled by the church pastor. They had not had sex for well over a year because she “didn’t feel he loved her” and he was honoring her wishes while they went to counseling. She was accusing him of being sexually abusive.

The pastor looked at her and gently said, “withholding of sex is a form of sexual abuse”. She was furious and file for divorce shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, my Christian “friend” was distraught for many reasons but an elder pointed out 1 Cor 7:15. My “friend” found a new wife and his been living in marital bliss for over ten years now!

My “friend” used to watch romantic movies with a firm conviction they were like science fiction - It didn’t really happen that way but it was nice to imagine. He now enjoys those movies because he knows it is REAL! You just have to find the right ADULT with whom to spend the rest of your life and be your best friend. She becomes sister, daughter, mother, friend, lover, wife - all in one person. It is actually quite remarkable. You get a feel for just how much wisdom God must have to create something so incredibly beautiful and fulfilling.

The real exciting part is that this marriage relationship is a “type” of our relationship with Him. We are the Bride!
