A controversial website that allows whistle-blowers to anonymously post government and corporate documents has been taken offline in the US.
Wikileaks.org, as it is known, was cut off from the internet following a California court ruling, the site says.
The case was brought by a Swiss bank after “several hundred” documents were posted about its offshore activities.
Other versions of the pages, hosted in countries such as Belgium and India, can still be accessed.
Wikileaks, in case you’ve never heard of it, has been gaining profile as the place to put information that someone is trying to keep under cover:
The site was founded in 2006 by dissidents, journalists, mathematicians and technologists from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa.
It so far claims to have published more than 1.2 million documents.
Well - what the judge had the authority to do was to cut off the DNS service. The IP address still exists, and the servers are still up. The judge doesn’t have the authority to touch the servers that the data sits on since they are outside the US.

For now there are many ways to get around it and the court looks like a third world donkey. Way to go Judge!

Seems like the process was a bit underhanded, if the Wikileak site narrative is accurate in its chronology. Looks like a bit of judicial bullying, IMO. Still not a problem, though, as the foreign sites are still up and running, and the IP addy works, as one would expect.
The demand absolute privacy for people that leak things that are very possibly not even based in fact, but at the same time they demand that their sources and those that discuss things must be kept completely secret regardless of if they intentionally work to harm others through lies or though disclosing things that no one else has a legitimate right to know.
There are leaks about individuals on that site. There are leaks about our military's rules of engagement. There are national security issues that if true could put our people at risk on that site.
These aren't people supporting civil liberties. These are people who are attacking civil liberties and wanting to do so under a veil of secrecy.
These are the same folks who published the supposed Rules of Engagment (for US Military in Iraq) that were/are still classified.

Agreed, there is nothing “noble” about releasing information that might be classified. It’s a dangerous, and perhaps deadly game that people are being led into by this.
Certainly there are things we’d all love to see “released” eventually, for our own edification and perhaps even vindication... but to do so at the price of destruction of the US government certainly (and most of our allies) is nothing more than another Liberal movement in THIS country - not to mention many other countries.
