PALOMINAS Some of the garbage was located in thick brush. Other pieces of litter were embedded in the frozen ground.
But a tireless group of 25 people still managed to collect nearly every item of trash along a steep trail in Ash Canyon on Monday.
They filled a total of about 50 jumbo-sized trash bags.
The area is frequently traveled by illegal immigrants who leave behind piles of things like plastic bottles, metal cans, clothing and backpacks.
This effort was the second in a series of cleanups that are being organized by Steve Willsey of Hereford.
The hike up the trail was steep, and the trash was very difficult to pickup.
There is years and years of buildup on this trail, so some of this stuff is in a gully, and it is layered under dirt, he said.
The higher elevations of the trail were slippery due to snow and loose rocks. People held a hand-line as they climbed up and down certain sections.
They wore gloves to protect their hands from sharp edges on the trash. Many of them used sticks to help pick up the litter.
Once the bags were filled and tied shut, they were placed along the side of the trail. Then the bags were transported to a site for collection.
Several participants said they were more than willing to take part in the event.
Ive had it up to here with these illegals, Steve Reinhart, of Sierra Vista, said, waving his hand just above the top of his head. They are just trashing our country and nobody seems to want to do anything about it except they want to make them legal. It dont make no sense to me.
Blaine Keckley, who lives in Sierra Vista during the winter months, said he cleans trails near his home in Ohio as a form of recreation.
There is plenty of garbage in Ohio. There isnt even an excuse for all the garbage back there. Its legals doing it back there, and there is still a lot of garbage, he said.
Reinhart said he realizes that solving the immigration problem is complicated.
He said he doesnt think building a border fence will prevent illegal immigrants from entering the United States, because they will either go over it, under it or through it.
My solution is what we did here in Arizona. Pass a law that if you hire them, you get fined, he said. The law actually says the offending business will lose its license to operate. Reinhart said he hopes the federal government will follow suit.
Willsey thanked everyone who took part in the cleanup effort.
You are doing a good thing for the forest and for this beautiful country, he told them.
The next event will take place in May on Memorial Day. It will probably be held in Ramsey Canyon.

BORDER PING
Americans doing the work illegals won’t?
Yes, physical barriers are a complete waste of time. That's why we shouldn't have locking doors on our homes, and jails should just have curtains or beads instead of steel bars and concrete.

Bush could stop the Invasion of the U.S by Mexico in one day. He could put troops on the Border with orders that, if fired upon, they had the right to go into Mexico in pursuit of the skanks.
Instead, he allows, he tolerates, he EMBRACES the Invasion by 5,000 to 10,000 illegals EVERY DAY who make it into the U.S. without being caught. If that isn’t “impeachable”, I don’t know what is.
And why aren’t the illegals in detention awaiting deportation out there in orange jumpsuits and a chain gang picking up this litter?
Would infringe on their U.S. granted civil rights and not be PC. Might even upset the president of Mexico, wouldnt want to do that. ;-)
Then they need to get a large trebuchet (kind of like a catapult, but better) and fling the stuff back over the border.
The didn’t call it a siege engine for nothing!
If the plastic bottles, cans of carbonated drinks were marked as returnables $$$, they would cash them in, saves on clean up; and these litter pickers from risking their life and limb to carry out the trash. Keeps my state clean.
Story: A person with a well known family name, purchased a large parcel of forest land from a gentleman who had once run a wood mill some distance away. The buyer built roads in for her home, was environmentally conscious and gave access and/or pathways to people who wanted to hike for the day; however, liberals who felt they should camp, build camp fires and do whatever they want, when they want on her land; dumped disposable diapers in piles on the pathways. How many people actually carry lbs of baby diapers while hiking? Owner finally restricted the land to family and friends use only. Liberals became outraged. The moral to the story is, people pick up garbage after people all the time--so is not always an illegal with "litter". The case of the "load of diapers" dumped has happened in other places as well to protest private ownership of land. These were not illegals "dumping".
Just a story, take from it what you wish.
Here in West Texas, cops and security types refer to illegals as “diaper dumpers” for their habit of dumping trash, always including dirty diapers, anywhere they want to.
Illegals are effectively immune to arrest for minor infractions like littering, since ICE has jurisdiction over them and will not prosecute for anything less than a major felony and sometimes not even for that.
Illegal aliens are liberal? We knew that.
they should be laying mines or something, maybe team-fortress turrets/sarc
its a shame that we have probably 10,000 miles of the ‘noise’ barriers along many of our busy highways, but cannot put up 2,000 of a security barrier along our border
comfort vs security, comfort wins
I am proud of our country, but not of the nitwits who are sending it into the crapper
Where are environmentalists on this? Why aren’t they screaming? No, they just oppose the fence for “environmental reasons”. There’s no reason.
I’ve had it with Bush and the limp wristed GOP.
They are taking this nation down the unspeakable path to a one world corporation.
While I can appreciate the work done by these volunteers, I think the job should be done by prisoners, specifically illegals being held in the local jail, or convicted illegals doing time in the state’s prison system.
