I wouldn't call it control, but influence. And as a thought experiment compare the economy under Carter versus Reagan.
Does everything have to be about POW time. Seriously, that does not qualify him for President. Good on him for surviving and is a hero. But he gets 1000 dollars a month for being a POW, got at least one award out of it. Probably numerous promotions since he retired as a Captain. What more does this guy deserve??? We are all proud of him for it, but enough is enough.

The unemployment rate is still under five percent which means people are still buying things. No soupline yet, although Big Media would like us to believe one is in the immediate future. Unless of course we adopt sane, rational leftist socialist measures. (smirk)

A huge problem is that many people who live in somewhat depressed areas (Michigan) expect to stay put and the jobs come to them. As you pointed out about Wichita the jobs are there. Or other places. But people have to be willing to relocate. I’ve passed large buildings in the Twin Cities that had huge signs on the sides advertising for workers with their starting pay ($15.00) on them.
I go with Rasmussen Report’s approval rating. They usually do a 3 day rolling average and have just now gone to weekly.
Bush is at 35% Approval.
Errr... the entire federal income rate was slashed under Bush's tax cuts. I keep $4k more of my paycheck each year. If you earn a paycheck, its "trickled" down for you already.
The real proof of dumbing down of America is in the two candidates the major parties have produced this year.

In the meantime, I'll bet Wichita has a few (maybe more) high school and college students for whom $12 an hour would provide an acceptable incentive to apply, and it might provide enough income for them to pay for books, tuition, and an occasional tank of gas. If two or three of them work together, they might be able to swing a car payment, apartment, and groceries with that income.
The bottom line is that you get what you pay for -- sometimes. What you are offering is not a career for a lifetime, but it sounds like honest work for a short-term job, probably with different shifts.
You could do yourself and your community a big favor by recruiting students. Some of them might move on to something better, but if training can be done quickly (and from your description, it sounds possible) you can replace them with new student hires rather quickly.
I'll bet you can even find out-of-work IT people in your area who desperately need a job, any job, and they generally aren't drunks and druggies. They just need a job. Of course, you would have to put up with higher IQs and education than your own, and might hear occasional hints about process improvement, but that shouldn't deter you from hiring them. You could get the work done that you need, and it would help them survive. They might leave someday also, but you could find more.
It's pathetic how many people look to the government as their savior.

True but still what is mostly rotten here is that Presidents have very little effect on real economic trends. The Fed, Congress, Ways and Means guys like Rangel have far more as do the vagaries of the Market, OPEC, and other foreign investors as well as the weather, bubbles et al. The public is badly served once more that over the last 78 years, the media has put forward the idea that Presidents rule the economic model ala FDR. It is mostly untrue.
