That is what I am listening on......I notice the scanner prices are going up with the falling dollar.

If LA County ever builds their trunked digital system and links with ICIS and swallows LAPD and LAFD, then it will be the Bearcat 396T & 996T, and GRE PSR500 & PSR600 (formerly Radio Shack) as the only scanners you can listen on. (all over $500)

Thanks for the ping, Karl. The area is supposedly still under lockdown as they look for the two remaining shooters. KABC TV showed what looked like a small platoon of SWAT team members walking down the street in the area.

That’s one bad ass neighborhood (Frogtown).

Paraphrased News Conference

Around noon today, a man walking down the street carrying his two year old child was shot several times by occupants of a car in a drive by shooting.

As the shooting victim fell, he also dropped his two year old child. Someone came up and grabbed the child and removed the child from the scene of the shooting. The shooting victim is in critical condition. The two year old child was located later in good condition in a local hospital.

The shooters left the scene and less than a block away, the same shooters fired at more individuals passing by in a car. Then blocks from that shooting location, the police saw the shooters' car and made an attempt to pull the car over.

Instead the three shooters emerged from the car, firing their weapons. LAPD officers returned fire, killing one shooter. The other two shooters fled the scene.

LAPD officers believe that they now have one of the shooters in a barricaded lock down situation.

Well, right now, LAPD only encrypts internal affairs and perhaps some other uses that I havent heard. It gets costly deploying encyption systemwide due to the licensing fees required by Motorola.

Burbank encrypts their records channel due to HIPAA regulations. Pomona encrypts all their non-dispatch channels. And of course, Orange County encrypts all their law enforcement except their Red channel.

First, it is illegal to have an AK-47 in California. They have an anti-assault weapons ban that makes it illegal to have "evil looking" semiautomatic rifles.

Next, I would make a huge wager that the weapon is not a true AK-47 fully automatic rifle, but is a semiautomatic MAK-47 or similar semiautomatic clone that sort of looks like an AK-47.

I can not wait to hear some California politician state that even though it is illegal to own this kind of weapon, and even though it is illegal to shoot at police, the legislators need to pass some more laws to make this even more illegal as only making something much more illegal will stop it from happening in the future.

More ineffective laws are the dumb politicians solution to any problem. Maybe more jails combined with more money for enforcement of existing laws would be a better use of political time.

I’d bet anyone a S&W M&P 0.40 that you’re correct in that it is a semi-auto SKS or similar , not an AK* ..

LAPD officers have apprehended someone. There was also one police dog on scene helping subdue the suspect.

Maybe, and maybe not. If you're going to have an illegal weapon anyway, why not go for full boogie rock and roll? Especially since these gang types think that's "cool" or whatever equivalent term they might be using. Guns are easy to smuggle in a "machine parts" or similar. The ChiComs have been caught, more than once IIRC, smuggling full auto AK clones into So. Cal. So the gun could indeed be the real deal. What the LAPD should do is ask Arnold for a company of National Guard infantry types, then the gang bangers could find out about the real "real deal", the hard way.

Based on nothing but rough intuition, my first thought, too.

On local news, an LAPD officer just confirmed that one of the guns used by the "suspects" in the shooting today was an AK-47. According to local LAPD, AK-47s and Uzis are common gang weaponry and have been for a long time.

Did they distinguish between the "Real Deal" and a semiautomatic variant? They rarely do.
