TOLEDO,Ohio Senator John McCain said Thursday that an article in The New York Times about his close ties to a woman lobbyist was untrue, that he had no romantic relationship with the lobbyist and that he had no confrontations in 1999 with worried staff members who told him to stay away from her.
Obviously, Im very disappointed in the articleits not true, Mr. McCain said at a morning news conference in Toledo, where he was campaigning for president. At no time have I ever done anything that would betray the public trust or make a decision which in any way would not be in the public interest or would favor anyone or organization.
Asked if he ever had a romantic relationship with the woman, Vicki Iseman, 40, Mr. McCain, 71, responded, No. He described his relationship with Ms. Iseman as friends and said he had last seen her several months ago at an event.
Mr. McCains wife, Cindy, stood at his side throughout the news conference. She told reporters that she was also disappointed with The Times. And more importantly, my children and I not only trust my husband, but know that he would never do anything to not only disappoint our family, but disappoint the people of America, Mrs. McCain said. Hes a man of great character.
Mr. McCain said he knew nothing about an account in The Times from John Weaver, a former top McCain strategist and now an informal campaign adviser, who told the newspaper that he met with Ms. Iseman at Union Station in Washington at the time of Mr. McCains first run for president in 1999 and told her to stay away from the senator. I dont know anything about it, Mr. McCain said. Since it was in The New York Times, I dont take it at face value.

"The evidence may be fake, but the story is accurate, believe me."
“McCain Denies Aides Statements About Lobbyist”
As far as I can tell, there are no aides making these statements, only the NYT.
I guess we can expect this sort of “throw it against the wall and hope it sticks” journalism to continue right up to the election
I think there were two or three former aides. Curiously enough, they all have the same name, "Anonymous".
Weaver has put out a release denying he told the lobbyist to stay away even though he would have been right to do so.
He should have said..... “since it was in the NY Times..... well let’s just say the National Enquirer has much higher journalistic ‘standards’ than the NY Times”
TNR also is in this mess. As is , of course, CNN, MSNBC, NBC and other mainstream leftist media outlets. To take down John, while CNN has the Messiah and Hil debating nicely , so much so that on Fox, Frank Luntz had his group saying how wonderful both were and that the debate was a wash. Oh the wonder of liberalism and Fascist liberals as Jonah Goldberg writes!
Yes, the NY Times seems to be having difficulty producing a source...or evidence like a picture..or even naming what some "aide" supposedly said.
Gonna be a rough year for left-wing journalists at the old gray whore...
Charles Keating may disagree. I think he was proud of the favors he enjoyed.
McCain just cant lay off his sanctimonious crap. Bank on it that someone so sanctimonious is a hypocrite.
The Times left out the part about how this statement from McCain’s “aides” was a distortion of what John Weaver said. Weaver never said he thought McCain was having an affair, he said that Vicki Iseman was going around town name dropping, telling people she had influence over McCain, and that’s why he told her to knock it off. The NYT deliberately distorted this and spun a story heavy on innuendo that McCain was having an affair. That’s the real story behind this story, and what the Times neglected to mention in this CYA follow-up.
Senator McCain, see what happens when you kiss up to the left.
John McCain is the senator that liberal Democrats come to when they want a senator from the Republican side of the aisle. For example: McCain/Feingold (limits free speech); McCain/Kennedy (amnesty); McCain/Lieberman (50 cents per gallon gas tax increase).
I think most conservatives knew (including Rush Limbaugh who predicted a long time ago), that the media would keep giving the maverick air/press time, but if McCain ever ran against a Dem, the liberal media would turn against him.
Have you learned from this Senator McCain? As David Limbaugh said, if only you would fight as hard against the liberals, as you do against the conservatives.
That is a lot more broad that an aide.
“McCain Denies Aides Statements About Lobbyist
You are right. The headline is bogus. The headline means that McCain admits that the statements were made but denies the truth of their contents.
In reality, McCain is denying that the statements were ever made at all.
