'Barack' poised to rise on baby-name lists [Barf Alert!]
Washington Times ^ | 2/21/08 | Jennifer Harper

Perhaps the nation will see some baby "Baracks" arriving over the next few months no matter who wins the presidential election.

Sen. Barack Obama's name brand recognition has much currency these days as Americans mull over the appeal of the Illinois Democrat's name for their own precious offspring.

Barack has been crowned Name of the Year by Laura Wattenberg, creator of Baby Name Wizard, a popular online trend-tracking tool for parents-to-be at IVillage.com, offering instant advice in the crucial baby-name derby.

"This is no political statement, just a statement on names in our culture. Senator Barack Hussein Obama is leading American political names into uncharted territory. If he should win the presidential election, his name would be a landmark for a major party nominee. Already it's started to create the unprecedented spectacle of first name as a campaign issue," noted Mrs. Wattenberg, who also authored the 2005 book "The Baby Name Wizard."

Barack has yet to appear on the official roster at the Social Security Administration, which charts the popularity of boys' and girls' names from year to year, based on birth-certificate statistics.

Findings from the federal agency are not particularly promising for a certain New York Democrat, however. In the current top-1,000 names for girls, Hillary weighs in at 982. A well-known Arizona Republican can feel some satisfaction. On the top 1,000 names for boys, John is at No. 20.

Some wonder whether Barack would play well on the playground.

"Naming babies. Is there a Barack-o-rama in the future?" asked Karen Murphy, a writer for Strollerderby, a blog for new parents.

just checked out a baby name site that listed it as a Hebrew boy's name meaning lightning. . . .

As I said, the word for "bless" and the word for "lightning" are similar. The root for "bless" is transliterated B-R-K. The root for "lightning" is transliterated B-R-Q. Two of the three consonants are the same, but the last consonant is a different letter, although it is close in sound. (Arabic would be like the Hebrew.)

Based on the English spelling of the name "Barack," plus the meaning, I'm guessing his name is the "blessed/blessing" one, not "lightning." It's actually a good name, too bad it's wasted on this socialist.

BTW, I have advanced degrees in the Hebrew Scriptures, I have taught Hebrew, and I have dozens of Hebrew reference works here in my study.

I believe Barrack is Swahili for "one whose head is too small for his ears."

Oh good grief....this is pathetic.

And for what it’s worth, in proper Arabic it’s spelled Barak...no C. Mubarak means “blessed.” Talk about the worst name for a politician.

You are an idiot ... thank you for revealing yourself. Let’s review. You say I’m being racist. When I ask you how, you acknowledge that I’m not being racist, but then again state that I am. Now you want to make smartass remarks about my screen name, which is pretty much the last argument of every head case who can’t defend something they’ve said.

I would not take the insult personally. He is one of the people who defends Obama at every chance. It is funny how Obama people interject race into every issue.

I kinda like Xander, but we did not name our boys by Xander. lol. We have a Ryan, Eric, and Jeremy. Soon we will need ANOTHER boy name (mid-may). I think we are going toward Brian or Zachary. Not sure what Julie and I will settle on.

Yep. And in 20 years half will be in prison. Unless all of us have been beheaded, except for those of who might die of old age before the US is just another part of the caliphate.

Never heard that one. Here, I have only seen Shaniqua or Shamiqua. (Use your own phonetic spelling.) English was hard enough that I never desired to use eubonics.

Hillary is Most Poisoned Baby Name in History

According to data published by the Social Security Administration, the name Hillary is the most severely poisoned baby name in history. Hillary had been steadily climbing the baby name charts since the 1960s, when it first graced the Top 1000, becoming the 136th most common name for baby girls in 1992. But the name sharply reversed course in 1993, smashing several longstanding records for name contamination in its plunge from the Top 1000 girl names last year.

The title for the most rapid case of name contamination had been held by Ebenezer and then Adolph, names that were shunned by parents after they became associated with Dickens’s miserly banker and the Nazi dictator Hitler. But while Ebenezer and Adolph each took over 30 years to fall from the Top 1000 after they were negatively associated with their prominent name sakes, Hillary dropped off the charts in just 10 years, upsetting the prior records in less than 30% of the time. Besides this achievement, Hillary also set records for largest drop in a single year (295 places in 1994), two years (420 places in 1993-1994) and ten years (>864 from 1993 to 2002). These titles taken together constitute the grand slam of name poisoning.
