IOWA CITY, Iowa -- George McGovern, the former South Dakota senator and presidential candidate, endorsed Hillary Clinton in Iowa City on Saturday.

"I think that if we can elect her president, she'll be a greater president even than her brilliant husband," McGovern told the crowd gathered in a hot barn at the Johnson County Democrats' annual barbeque.

Organizers estimated 1,800 people showed up for the event, calling it the biggest crowd in the barbeque's history and noting they had to run out twice for more food.

McGovern talked about the challenges Clinton and her then-boyfriend Bill Clinton faced when they helped run his organization in Texas during his 1972 presidential campaign, predicting he would have an easier time selling her in Iowa than she did selling him in Texas.

And in more breaking news today Jane, the sun did come up in the east and expected to set in the west, followed by a period of dark.

McGovern lost Texas by a slim margin (that is, compared to how he did in Utah).

1972 popular vote in Texas:

Nixon, Republican...............2,298,896
McGovern, Democrat..........1,154,289
Jenness, Socialist Workers..........8,664
Schmitz, American......................6,039
others.........................................3,393

McGovern's share of the vote was about 33% (Nixon was just short of beating him 2 to 1).

just what i was thinking. The McGovern campaign is a lesson to all Dems, one that they will never learn.

Just because you attract young, impressionable voters with your ‘peace and love’ theme, doesn’t mean they will drag themselves out of their beds to vote when crunch time comes.

"McGovern’s endorsement surely is the kiss of death to Hillary’s campaign!!"

I would prefer being endorsed by Gorbachev; much smarter and more charismatic.

"I think that if we can elect her president, she'll be a greater president even than her brilliant husband,"

Only in the looking-glass world of the Left would the "endorsement" of a man who suffered the worst defeat in the country's history be accounted an asset. And with this statement, he shows himself even more senile than he was in 1972.

Yes, he is, McGovern that senile old fart who has a crush on Stalin to this very day. He and that other Stalin-worshipper Pete Seeger, they’re still here, hanging on.

Guess the thought of Soviet Heaven isn’t too pleasant to contemplate.

How well does that "endorsement" sits with the bent one???
