Why the GOP Lost Voters Like Me (Geraldo Rivera on Immigration)
New York Post ^ | February 24, 2008 | Geraldo Rivera

Posted on 02/24/2008 1:37:15 PM PST by lowbridge

No political party can prevail nationally on Anglo votes alone, so the long-term danger to Republicans is that their party is sending a message to Latinos that it doesn't want us.

"There has been too much of an anti-immigration tone," Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Belart, a South Florida Republican congressmen, told USA Today. "When people start to perceive that immigrants are being put in the same category as a threat to national security, it's hard to get your message across."

-snip

"Bush has worked incredibly hard for his Hispanic vote share. He reversed historic Republican Party positions on issues of importance to Hispanics and showed a willingness to listen to the needs of the Latino community."

That respectful romance with Latinos ended abruptly in the lead up to the November 2006 elections, when extremists on immigration hijacked the GOP.

One of them, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, may wish he had taken a more moderate stance instead of essentially adopting the position of the Minutemen and similar radical anti-immigration groups. These groups promulgate their wildly exaggerated portrayal of a cascade of brown people overwhelming our southern borders, running loose to rape, steal and murder on the streets of our cities.

Mike Huckabee has signed Senator Jeff Sessions 15 point pledge against illegals.

****If we hadn't had Senator Sessions exposing the truth of the Bush/McCain/Kennedy Amnesty Bill on the Senate floor last June, we would never have known (until too late) what they had been planning in secret!***

Mike Huckabee is endorsed by Duncan Hunter & James Dobson----They are keeping Mike Huckabee's feet to the fire.

....also has Chuck Norris campaigning with him.

My estimate of Mike Huckabee has risen considerably.

As a conservative Latina, I agree. Remember the Spanish-language Republican debate? Duncan Hunter explained his strict anti-illegals position to that audience. He didn’t change his position or try to pander. And they applauded him.

The only boos at that debate were for Ron Paul when he suggested we should kiss up to Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.

Which of course opened teh door for asshats like Graham to call all of us anti-illegal voters bigots.

McCain and Huckabee have said virtually the same thing. Welcome to the Big Tent. Conservatives, stand outside.

“Its embarrassingly racist to assume that all hispanic voters favor illegal immigration, or that none of them comprehend rule of law.”

Well, first off, “hispanic” is not a race, it is a language group. That being said, I agree with you that there are a lot of American-born hispanics and those who came here legally who are dead-set against the illegals.

I’m of German heritage.

I don’t want millions of German high school drop outs in America.

I don’t want millions of college educated Germans in America competing for the same work I do.

Question to Hispanic Americans:

Why do you want those things?

Oh cry me a Rio Grande, Geraldo. You scumbag. You KNOW you NEVER voted for the GOP in your life.

Here’s a couple of tips to help you get a clue:

1) We’re not “anti-immigration”.... we’re anti ILLEGAL immigration. There’s a HUGE difference.

2) Illegal immigrants, themselves, are not the national security threat (although, they are beginning to threaten national identity in some areas). The OPEN FREAKING BORDER is the security threat. It’s a flashing sign for any and all angry Muslims on how to enter the US w/o scrutiny.

Why in the world does ANY network give this cretin any respect?

saudi money has bought and paid for our politicians, and our media....I have always seen the signs of the muslims and the invaders from, south of the border, are on the same side....but with the politicians and the media constantly siding with the enemy while the money pours in for the politicians and the media to commit treason....it is difficult to help people see the truth. The enemy side will always be able to out-fund us, and as everyone knows the enemy side is using our own money from sale of the oil to us....my oh my oh my and our own politicians will not let Americans drill for oil here on our soil....duped again, we’ve been had. Quite a scam going on here....sell oil to us, take the money, buy off the politicians and the media, and fund the terrorists....only the blind are left not seeing.

You know, Geraldo, I’m a bit weary of the incessant hyphenation of the American identity. Between black-Americans, hispanic-Americans, eoropean-Americans, and native-Americans, I’ve had it up to here...

Part of the reason for the ‘success’ of the PC Multi-Culti agenda is the fact that folks began to think of themselves in terms of their heritage rather than their potential legacy. Folks found their history more significant than their futures.

For my part, I’d rather be an American, first, and let the subsets follow that.

Get off your damnable high horse and stand up for America...its greatness, its promise, and its beacon of freedon in a darkening world. If we don’t do it, no one will. If we don’t do it now, it won’t be done. And, if WE lose, all is lost.

Lock and Load.

He has always been a liberal. Besides, if you lose someone because he does not think the laws ought to be enforced for everyone, well then you lose him.

I think Geraldo actually has a tiny point. The tone of the debate is what soured Hispanics to the GOP. There is a way to be opposed to illegal immigration without making all Hispanics feel like they are the scum of the earth.

Actually, things would be a lot more orderly in this country if those of us of German ancestry were in charge.

Just kidding. Sort of. ;)

At the height of the immigration protests two years ago AZ hispanics were polled and 56% were for enforcement of border/employment laws. To say that American hispanics think or vote monolithically is ignorance (or lying) of the highest order. I have to wonder how the pollsters assured themselves that only American citizens were included in that poll even.
