It would be an extraordinary development if it happened.

Given Great Britain’s support for Kosovo’s independence from Serbia, it would have a hard time complaining if Scotland decided to succeed from it.

within the EU umbrella, how big a deal is this? If the SNP can get hold of all the tax revenues that went to westminster before, are they even competent enough to run things internally that were handled nationally previously?

Do countries that secede from others also let go of the financial aid/welfare/subsidies coming from the ‘mother’ country that dominates them?

I was amazed that Scotland was so liberal and if they secede, England will lurch to the right as a result.

Scotland and Ireland may wind up as the last bastions of Christianity in the British Isles.

There are many questions for independence. It might be that Scotland could prosper. I am not sure of the position of the North Sea resources. This said to have delayed a monetary collapse of the UK. Most English people can boast of Scottish connections, mine a long way from Elizabeth Duncan of Edinburgh. (Gt Grandmother).

It is likely based on economics. Like it or not we live in a consumer society. Sean Connery, whose male line is directly from Wexford,Ireland, would no doubt wish to consult his accountant. Mr Connery has not been too keen to pay them to Bonnie Scotland for many years. He is not stupid in these matters.

A few conservative Canadians did want to see Quebec separate. This would finally end the extortion over the years. A survey found that many Quebecers still believed they would be able to use a Canadian dollar. They believed the tens of thousands of federal civil servants would still have Canadian jobs. Federal jobs are an industry in it's self in Quebec.

I had the view at the time, that if Quebec separated and the economy failed badly ie: groceries rose by 25% and unemployment doubled, things would happen.

The separatist leaders would run for their lives.

Great, so they can quit sending their North Sea Oil money to London and start sending it straight to Brussels. Most of the best of Scotland got out to the colonies.

Well, Scotland and England have been working on their relationship for a good thousand years, so I'm not sure I would hold my breath for anything radical to happen, but you never know. They built that dreadful Scottish parliament building...that was radical.

I'm not sure that it benefits Scotland economically, but what the hell, they want a Scotland of Scots, by Scots and for Scots. It's understandable, and who knows, perhaps it will allow England to regain a sense of pride in being English rather than the always ambiguous and lately rather Muslim "British." It would be rather strange to lose the term "British" from our lexicon however. Of course Wales may stick with England.

It's fascinating to watch Europe devolve into ever smaller states. Belgium may not survive either.

I’ve heard claims that were it not for the socialists in Scotland, the UK could be nearly as economically conservative as the US. Anyone know if this is really true?

All of Britain is One Nation under God, consisting of Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Everything else in the United Kingdom is a conditional Protectorate.

They should conduct themselves accordingly and make common cause, while preserving, developing, and applying their regional cultural traditions. Much as I like Connery, I would have thought he could maintain and advance a decent allegiance to both Scotland in particular and Britain in general.

Scotland and other parts of Britain need more eco-industry and a national trade policy of Britain being 'its own best market first', while finding a strong market for its exports to America.

I doubt it.

The commercial and business entities are too closely tied to permit a parting.

Sir Sean, who was born in Edinburgh, has previously sworn not to return to the country until it is independent.

Presumably he'll be bringing his considerable wealth back with him as well so as to contribute to the Scottish coffers?
