Hollywood took on a new role in Sunday's 80th annual Academy Awards: bit player.
In a series of startling upsets and a few expected triumphs, almost all of the top Oscars were handed to foreigners and iconoclastic show business outsiders. Every one of the evening's winning actors came from beyond American borders, and the ceremony's dominant film -- best picture winner "No Country for Old Men" -- was created by a pair of filmmaking brothers from Minnesota who have never made a mainstream movie in their three-decade career.
In an era when overseas revenue accounts for more than half of a movie's income, the percentages were tilted far more heavily toward foreigners throughout the awards show, with an especially strong showing from Europe.
Best actor Daniel Day-Lewis of "There Will Be Blood" lives in Ireland, while "La Vie en Rose" surprise best actress winner Marion Cotillard makes her home in Paris. Spain's Javier Bardem was named best supporting actor for "No Country for Old Men," and Scotland's Tilda Swinton won best supporting actress for "Michael Clayton." Many of the evening's lower-profile awards -- for art direction, makeup, costume design and animated short among them -- went to non-American filmmakers and designers.

We can't waste time making good movies because we're too busy trying to impeach Bush, stop the war in Iraq, fight AIDS, combat global warming, and loving ourselves.
There fixed it, you had their priorities out of order.
You could have added: Getting coked up, engaging in meaningless diatribes on the MSM, supporting style over substance, and generally just making a nuisance of themselves.
I don't know about that... O Brother Where Art Thou seemed to be a mainstream movie to me...
When even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences admits that Hollywood sucks, you would think they would start to take notice.
I didn’t watch them because I was not home, but they had over 30 million people watch which is quite a bit. I guess you expected numbers from the Titanic days. Well they did not have a “Titanic” type movie in the nomination this year which is why they did not have those numbers. When they bring out another epic type movie as superior and outstanding as Titanic than numbers will go up again. Juno just ain’t gonna do it. Plus you should be happy an anti abortion movie did so well at the Oscars. What a uninformed person you are to spout out about anti-Bush movies when they were not even nominated. I think Juno would be a movie that this website would praise. I guess I got the one poster who is not conservative today...damn!
Hollywood doesn't make films like that anymore.
No doubt you missed the Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking category.
Ping. Awaiting Neilsen overnights for TV ratings. Nikki Finke yesterday cited rumors that numbers would be down. I did my part by NOT watching...

“I hear that ABC dramatically lowered expectations about tonight’s TV ratings to advertisers. It will be interesting to see the Nielsen’s, as the rain-postponed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series - Auto Club 550 race in Fontana is just about to restart at Lap 20 with a total of 300. After that there is another NASCAR race, the Nationwide series - Stater Bros 300, that is 200 laps. Will America tune out NASCAR to watch the Oscars?”
I haven’t watched that phony POS since the late 60s, when the best film ever made (Just my opinion), The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly didn’t garner one nomination for anything. I haven’t seen one film that was nominated, nor have I seen anything in the top ten movies this week.
why should anyone care what these people do
No doubt you missed the Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking category.
Please don’t tell me I am wrong and an anti-Bush movie got some recognition. That means two things. Ugh on the Oscars and two, I have to apologize to the poster I posted to earlier.
This occured right after American soldiers, via satellite, were used to announce the nominees in Best Short Documentary and award the Oscar to a film about same-sex marriage.
Good God those folks are sick. Sorry to Zakeet for my post. I was clearly the misinformed.
I watched about 20 minutes of the “gala” and managed to capture one precious moment (Marion Cotillard accepting for Best Actress) and the aforementioned anti-American orgy.
Well you saved me from watching it. The retelevise it and I was going to take a look at it, but you just saved me four hours of my life. Thank you!!! lol.
WOW! What a hunk! Loved him in Last of the Mohicans! Didn’t want that movie to end!
"When you have to shoot, you don't talk, you just shoot." I don't know about all-time best movie, (although one of my favorites) but certainly best movie score ever. Ennio Morricone was a musical genius.
“No Country for Old Men.” ........... Boring body count movie that ended with room for a sequel.
Three problems with that type of movie.... it made money, people went to see it in droves and liked it and there were no anti-republican or anti-Christian politics screaming at you throughout the movie.
