And the Oscar for most depressing . . .
Jewish World Review ^ | Feb. 25, 2008 | Mitch Albom

I'm didn't watch the Oscars. Normally I do. But I've spent enough time and money on the most depressing, dark and disturbed lineup of movies I ever can remember. I don't need to see them get rewarded.

Am I the only one who remembers when they actually gave Oscars to movies that had happy endings? There's not one happy ending in this lot — unless you consider an unplanned teenage pregnancy resulting in someone else's adoption a happy ending. That's the big payoff in "Juno."

Otherwise, you have "There Will Be Blood," in which a tyrannical oil baron destroys everyone and everything around him; "No Country For Old Men," in which a serial killer destroys everything and everyone around him; "Michael Clayton," in which greed gets nearly everyone killed; and "Atonement," in which a false accusation ruins the lives of all involved.

Um. Remind me again.

Why do we go to the movies?

THERE'S NO DEBATE HERE

Now, I'm not a Pollyanna. I enjoy films. I collect them. And I understand that not every story ends with music swirling and heroes walking off into a sunset.

But lately there's this sense that unless a movie is dark, violent and hopeless, it can't be "real." It can't be "art." It can't truly "matter." I put these words in quotes because it feels as if critics and awards committees define things that way.

I’m convinced that the people who called ‘Million Dollar Baby’ ‘high tragedy’ had actually never seen a movie before.

.....or they had seen too many movies.

He’s a movie star, not an actor. Movie stars aren’t known for their acting.

The problem is that Clooney thinks he's an actor - and not just an actor: he thinks he's an auteur.

Ever notice how Harrison Ford always looks a bit startled, as if he toilet has begun overflowing for no particular reason.

LOL! Absolutely spot on!

Random Hearts is kind of a workshop in that expression.

And the TV audience stayed away in droves, apparently.

I do yell, DAS BOOT! when I get served a beer at a local bar. The bartender is also a huge fan.

“Art is dead.”

Nope. I saw him a church last night.

I actually liked random hearts.

If you want to see some really interesting acting, rent The Notebook. Two old pros just kicking the crap out of young pretty actors. Basically stealing the movie.

Yes. I saw Die Hard 7 or 8, whatever it was. Loved it.

Rambo 8, Rocky 12, loved those too.

Try Wages of Fear — all the action of Die Hard plus weird French homoeroticism. Ha!

I tuned in off and on, though I haven’t seen a single movie this year. The set looked like a funeral parlor and the movie clips were so depressing I had nightmares. Kept me up for hours. I cannot recall feeling more negative about life.

Perhaps it’s all part of a plan to get us so depressed we’ll vote for air purveyor Obama.

It’s the same moronic stuff with great literature—— if it’s happy with a happy ending, it must be trash!

However, if everyone you care about is dead at the end....IT IS BRILLIANT! /sarc....

Yes, I am the Twinkie Eater of Books and Movies.

Hollywood is depressed, mad, and frustrated.

Maybe their hate is pushing out imagination and “art” right now.

One thing good about Oprah’s Kid winning the Presidency is that we may get some good movies again?

Wishful thinking maybe.

Nah, too pro military. Thats why it lost to anti-Christian Golden compass.
You are telling me the visuals in that dud were better than Transformers that made over 300 million domestically?

Hence why I don’t get the oscars, the nominate movies that suck at the box office.
