Canberra - The trial of nine Muslims suspected of planning a terrorist attack has begun in the Australian city of Sydney. The nine are accused, among other crimes, of attempting to buy chemicals for the attack.
The men were arrested in the autumn of 2005, shortly after the Australian government adopted a tough new law that makes it easier to prosecute those suspected of terrorism.
In Melbourne, the trial of 12 other terrorist suspects, also arrested in 2005, has resumed. Their case is not related to the Sydney trial. The 12 are accused of planning attacks on football stadiums and railway stations to force Australia to withdraw its troops from Iraq.
The accused in both cases all proclaim their innocence.
