Yep. Makes plenty of sense. if a substation goes down the power has no place to go and the operators trip off the supply. Typically to avoid more serious problems the trips tend to be many times higher than required. The supply and load need to be balanced. Not easy.

If they shut down one of the reactors unexpectedly, it could have caused instability on the grid and the cascade of blackouts.

That’s certainly not impossible.

What would be impossible is for them to both be up again. You can essentially flip a switch to shut down a nuclear plant, but bringing it back online is a very careful and lengthy process.

Getting something on the local news now about a transformer having “problems”...which in turn made the nuke plants shut down, which brought about the domino effect.

Stuff like that didn't even happen after our major hurricanes, including the BIG one, Andrew. I know, I was here for that.

FNC is saying blackouts could continue well into this evening.

How the hell do you have night school with no power??

But the power here in THIS school is on and has been on the entire day. No worries in the physical plant, itself. No computer issues even.

Seems like a simple load balance issue. Having more generation than can be absorb by the grid can cause a cascade pretty easy. Some sub-grids got too much and some too little. In either case there are trips. This really does not seem to be a big deal unless you are in traffic in Dade County with millions of Juan Pablo Montoya types. But it is never considered safe to drive in Dade.

Exactly. I’m in Central FL (Seminole Cty) and we went 2 weeks with no power after Charlie...

Keep us posted on any info from the friend(s) at FPL, please.

Do you know for SURE that they did shut down the 2 nukes at Turkey Point?

I find your comment very interesting. Just this morning I was listening to Hal Lindsey (controversial I know) talk about cyber attacks by our enemies and the destruction they could create. Check out what he says if your interested. Featured Video: February 22nd. Hal Lindsey Report

This hasn’t just affected Dade. There are sporadic outages throughout the state.

My office mate’s daughter works for the Orlando Utilities Commission. We’re getting some interesting reports from her, to wit:

“Something big and important broke”

“I’m in the red area anyway. Tell my non-Florida relatives I love them and I promise not to eat them if I turn into a radiation monster.”

I don’t think she’s taking it too terribly seriously.

Power was out in Seminole county here (north west of Orlando) for an hour or so.
