JOHN R. LOTT: Columbine To Va. Tech To NIU: Gun-Free Zones Or Killing Fields?
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 2/25/2008 | JOHN R. LOTT JR.

Posted on 02/26/2008 3:06:51 PM PST by neverdem

As Northern Illinois University restarts classes this week, one thing is clear: Six minutes proved too long.

It took six minutes before the police were able to enter the classroom that horrible Thursday, and in that short time five people were murdered, 16 wounded.

Six minutes is actually record-breaking speed for the police arriving at such an attack, but it was simply not fast enough. Still, the police were much faster than at the Virginia Tech attack last year.

The previous Thursday, five people were killed in the city council chambers in Kirkwood, Mo. There was even a police officer already there when the attack occurred.

But, as happens time after time in...

--snip--

Though in a minority, a number of universities — from large public schools such as Colorado State and the University of Utah to small private schools such as Hamline in Minnesota — let students carry concealed handguns on school property.

Many more schools, from Dartmouth College to Boise State University, let professors carry concealed handguns. Again, with no evidence of problems.

Few know that Dylan Klebold, one of the two Columbine killers, was closely following Colorado legislation that would have let citizens carry a concealed handgun. Klebold strongly opposed the legislation and openly talked about it.

No wonder, as the bill being debated would have allowed permitted guns to be carried on school property. It is quite a coincidence that he attacked Columbine High School the very day the legislature was scheduled to vote on the bill.

With all the media coverage of the types of guns used and how the criminal obtained the gun, at some point the news media might begin to mention the one common feature of these attacks: They keep occurring in gun-free zones.

Gun-free zones are a magnet for these attacks.

Gun-Free Zones Or Killing Fields?

Neither. Free-fire zones.

Is it really about guns in our culture or is it about the cult of self-indulgent victim hood and all the self-centered, self-absorbed narcissists that believe that society owes them something and that they have some kind of legitimate grievance against society or their peers because somebody was “mean” to them or didn’t think they were “special” enough?

If they want to pass “gun control” laws maybe they should give you a psychological exam to see if you’re a whiner or spoiled brat first. No guns for spoiled whiners.

you know, i agree with this guy but he’s a shill for the gun industry, not a professor. i guess we need him to counteract the crap that the anti-gun people put out.

What a deceitful post! “I agree with this guy but...” John Lott is an honorable academic and researcher and has never been a “shill” for anything other than good research that has provided a very rare glimpse of the truth concerning a highly political subject and, I add, the most important basic right of all beings (self-defense).

What a lame attempt to deceive people with your intro—you don’t agree with “this guy” one bit. You are simply throwing a cheap and unsophisticated attack.

um, no. i agree with his thinking. i am severely pro gun. my only issue with lott is his methods.

he goes from prestigious university to prestigious university usually for about 3 years at a time.

who pays his salary? not the university. pro-gun organizations do. they approach the school and say, "lott will teach here for a few years. we'll pay his salary. he'll publish tons of stuff! he'll be loved and hated."

schools cannot resist. they have nothing to lose and notoriety to gain. i just see it as a little dishonest. he's bought and paid for. but it doesn't make him wrong.

If you agree with him, then you think that he is telling the truth.

If he is telling the truth, why does it matter why?

If you agree with him, his articles might make you want to buy a gun. But if you agree with him, you think you should have a gun. So what's your beef?

John R. "Lott is the author of 'Freedomnomics' and a senior research scientist at the University of Maryland."

IIRC, Lott has a Ph.D. in economics, and he’s a shill for the Second Amendment. Before the University of Maryland, he was at SUNY at Binghamton, the American Enterprise Institute and the University of Chicage, IIRC.

"This summer I will be moving to the University of Maryland. Previously I held positions at the University of Chicago, Yale University, Stanford, UCLA, Wharton, and Rice."

he has had many positions. he moves around a lot due to his little arrangements. his salary is never paid for by the school itself, but by grant organizations with their own agenda's.

at chicago, for one, his salary was paid for by the olin foundation which endows the university. now, there have been many olin professor's and not all of them have been of lott's ilk, but lott seems to thrive on this type of situation as do the prestigious schools at which he teaches.

Which grant organizations are funding Lott? The Olin Foundation closed shop after spending its funds in accordance with Mr. Olin’s wishes.
