Matthews: I Began as a WFB Conservative
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 02/27/2008 3:10:55 PM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

In the course of offering a tribute to William F. Buckley, Jr. on this afternoon's Hardball, Chris Matthews made a surprising revelation: that he came to political consciousness as a WFB conservative.

You'll find the transcript of the Hardball host's remarks below, but I'd encourage you to view the video, here. See if, like me, you're struck by the heartfelt nature of his comments.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: If you want to influence someone, get to him or her in high school. It's my experience that people at that age are the most impressionable, the most searching for guidance, for example, for purposes. It was in high school that I came under the charm and the influence of William F. Buckley, Jr., the dashing, charismatic young conservative who wrote God and Man at Yale, McCarthy and His Enemies, and founded the wistful, precocious, companionable monthly, National Review. As a high schooler, I could tell you which drugstore got National Review first. I went to hear Bill Buckley at a meeting of the Montgomery County Young Republicans. It was from National Review that I gained my early affection and appetite for political philosophy and argument.

Well, anything is possible.

I was a Democrat until I wised up at the age of 6.

We are, aren’t we?

It was a lovely moment, I’ll give you that:)

It would be a significant moment- if he was moved enough by it to stop, to think, to ponder.

Interestingly- I used to enjoy listening to Matthews- 10 plus years ago. He seemed fair, while providing humor and insight. Sadly, he’s become a hateful man- his anger infects his thinking to the point that I’m simply not interested in him anymore.

Damn shame. I miss the loyal opposition. (i.e. Daniel Patrick Moynihan etc.)

I suspect that Mr. Matthews is a liar:

“It was in high school that I came under the charm and the influence of William F. Buckley, Jr., the dashing, charismatic young conservative who wrote God and Man at Yale, McCarthy and His Enemies, and founded the wistful, precocious, companionable monthly, National Review. As a high schooler, I could tell you which drugstore got National Review first.”

I believe that National Review was originally a WEEKLY publication, eventually moving to the current bi-weekly publication. I don’t believe that it was ever a MONTHLY.

He started with WFB but with his IQ he felt more at home with Liberal Democrats. He is right at home with Michael Moore, Kusinich , Code Pink , Fidel Castro, need I go on and on.

Maybe he did start off life as a conservative, and then he looked at his profession and saw which side the money was on.

This, of course, begs the question: did he do a lot of drugs in college or something?

I watched this fool last night ask the mob if they liked the war. Now I never met anyone who liked war. You are left to wonder what in that mind?

He may have begun as a WFB conservative (which is dusbious in its own right), but he’s ended up a liberal, commie pansy, if that thing he passes of as a news program is any indication.
