Was Weicker a conservative in 1964? He just learned how liberal CT is and what it takes to survive there.
Not at all. He was always a liberal, Connecticut at the time was not particularly liberal (went for Ford in '76, Reagan in '80). The governor, Thomas Meskill was no liberal; and Democrat Ella Grasso would be a big improvement over present RINO Gov. Jody Rell if Grasso were still alive.
Weicker "survived" with his maverick label and friendship with big/old money in Fairfield County. Lieberman beat him, not as a liberal, but mainly by pointing out that Weicker missed a bunch of votes and wasn't doing his job.
The Connecticut of 1964 is gone, and people like me left after it changed. Connecticut lost population during Weickers one term.

When asked if he had "referred to Jesse Jackson as an ignoramus," Buckley said, "If I didn't, I should have." Bingo! Thanks for the ping!

"the facts"
I've tried to go over every one of those social issues with my parents, but it's impossible to keep them focused. They don't want to think about it. FDR and JFK are forever their heroes. You're right, there is no reasoning with them. Again politics is an emotional issue for Dems. Reason and logic don't enter into it.

Usually when famous figures pass on, I’m not particularly phased, one way or another. But Buckley is the exception. His rapier wit, intellectual prowess and level of debate made me sit up straight. I’ll truly miss him. I can’t think of another person who rises to the bar that he set so high.

"Rush"
However bombastic Rush sounds, he reads a lot of political literature. He is one of the best educators of conservatism out there. Maybe the best. I wish more conservative talk show hosts would educate as well as bray.

William F. Buckley Jr. is/was a hero of mine, and was the principal exponent of contemporary Conservatism in America. Most of the problems afflicting our Nation and the world are attributable to insufficient familiarity with his writing, thought, and ethos.

He inspited even the liberals to greatness. I googled "inspited" and indeed, it only appears as a typo.
Great word, however, considering your context.
Let me provide a definition:
Inspited: Inspired by spite.

LOL ... the photo reminded me of another
messy desk ... but the linked photo received a lot of ridicule. I dare not say the name in the same breath as WFB.
Yes, I'd like to be a fly on the wall in that room too. ;)

I was under the impression that Weicker was a Goldwaterite in 1964 but moved sharply to the left with Watergate.

Russert: "Do you believe GW is a threat?"
WFB: "No"
Russert: "But a recent poll says that 80% of the public believes it is a threat."
WFB: "Then you've got your work cut out for you."LOL! How true. If only Russert and the MSM would take heed.

Yes, and with Caroline Schlossberg now pontificating that Oprah’s Obama reminds her of JFK, so it will be with the masses.

I like this quote:
“The book — and the left’s reaction thereto — demonstrated that liberals could tolerate a communist sympathizer, but never a Joe McCarthy sympathizer.”

It was supposed to be "inspired". Spellcheckers work. When you use them.

"Now listen, you queer. Stop calling me a crypto Nazi, or I'll sock you in your goddamn face and you'll stay plastered." I remember the exchange as "Now listen, you pinko queer." Maybe its an old man embellishing fond memories. But I'm pretty sure the work "pinko" was in there.
To: SkyPilot
I must confess, the folks here who try an imitate his intellect by copying his response to letters (his famous: Cordially) irritate me.Well, they could be imitating, say, Teddy Kennedy's style.
To: Army Air Corps
William F. Buckley, Jr., may you rest in peace and amuse the saints with your wit and candor.Well, amongst the saints, It think only Paul and Augustine will be able to keep up. The rest will spend eternity scrambling for their dictionaries. :)
