Statement of National Gun Violence Prevention Organizations in Wake of Northern Illinois University Shooting

Washington, DC--Following yesterday’s mass shooting at Northern Illinois University which left six dead, including the shooter, and 16 wounded, America’s leading national gun violence prevention organizations, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and the Violence Policy Center, issued the following joint statement:

“Our sympathies go to all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

America is in a gun crisis. Yesterday’s shooting at Northern Illinois University was the sixth mass shooting in less than two weeks. On college campuses, in malls and stores, and in our neighborhoods, our nation is paying the ultimate price for the ease with which we allow almost anyone access to increasingly powerful weaponry. Yet all too many of our elected officials remain deaf to the daily toll guns exact across our nation. Mass shootings are not a force of nature unstoppable by man. They are the predictable result of our nation’s weak gun policies, and much can be done to prevent them.

To prevent future mass shootings we must begin to ratchet down the firepower that is available to civilians. For years, we have outlined proposals to reduce gun violence. We call on the presidential candidates to make gun violence prevention a priority issue. We demand that Congress hold hearings on gun violence prevention. And we urge federal and state policymakers to act immediately to implement policies such as those outlined below that will work to reduce the carnage:

  • An effective ban on all semiautomatic assault weapons. In addition, the Bush Administration should act immediately to better enforce the existing federal ban on the importation of foreign-made assault weapons.

  • A complete ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

  • Ensure that all gun sales at gun shows are subject to a background check.

  • Establish a system whereby university officials are notified when a student purchases a gun from a gun dealer.”

The Violence Policy Center is a national non-profit educational foundation that conducts research on violence in America and works to develop violence-reduction policies and proposals. The Center examines the role of firearms in America, conducts research on firearms violence, and explores new ways to decrease firearm-related death and injury.

“Notify university officials whenever a student buys a gun.”

That is a chilling look into the fascist mind of the gun control mentality.

America is in a gun crisis.

I agree. Those that should have them, can't.

Gun grabbers politicizing a tragedy. Not one of their suggestions would have prevented NIU from happening and they know it.

Also university presidents have absolutely no right to know if any student buys anything.

OK, lets do like UK. Ban guns for law abiding subjects. Gun crime goes up by 400%. People need gubermint protection and agree to higher taxes. Goobermint does nada, but talks a good story about the problem being with other countries without “progressive” gun laws. A variation on the theme of how socialist/communist countries blame their failures on other countries that are free and then attack them to steal their property for just a little reprive on collapse.

That is a chilling look into the fascist mind of the gun control mentality.

True, but here's the good news.

"We call on the presidential candidates to make gun violence prevention a priority issue."

Between the Heller decision and these VPC et al. clowns, having gun control as an issue hurts the left. If it's not Hillary, we got Barack Gungrabber Obama talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Obama and the Power of Words

At Cornell College on Dec. 5, for example, a student asked Mr. Obama how his administration would view the Second Amendment. He replied: "There's a Supreme Court case that's going to be decided fairly soon about what the Second Amendment means. I taught Constitutional Law for 10 years, so I've got my opinion. And my opinion is that the Second Amendment is probably -- it is an individual right and not just a right of the militia. That's what I expect the Supreme Court to rule. I think that's a fair reading of the text of the Constitution. And so I respect the right of lawful gun owners to hunt, fish, protect their families." It's at the source, not the excerpt.

Isn't Self-Defense Common Sense? - Barack Obama's Second Amendment is all about hunting and target shooting.

Obama evidently considers that de facto prohibition a "common-sense regulation," since he recently cited Washington's law as an example of constitutionally permissible gun control. "The notion that somehow local jurisdictions can't initiate gun safety laws to deal with gangbangers and random shootings on the street isn't borne out by our Constitution," he said.

I was reading about the "Bradley Effect," the supposed habit of whites to lie to poll takers when a black candidate is involved in an election. Bradley, a black, was ahead in the polls for Governor of CA in 1982. There also was Proposition # 15 that would ban handguns. The NRA led a voter registration drive at gunshops, and they signed up 300,000 new voters in CA. Prop 15 lost 63 - 37 percent, IIRC, and Bradley lost by 93,000 votes. VPC had the story at their site when I did a search. That's how I came across their plans for 2008.

* An effective ban on all semiautomatic assault weapons. In addition, the Bush Administration should act immediately to better enforce the existing federal ban on the importation of foreign-made assault weapons.

He used handguns and a shotgun, a pump IIRC.

* A complete ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

He just would have reloaded the pistols a couple of more times.

* Ensure that all gun sales at gun shows are subject to a background check.

* Establish a system whereby university officials are notified when a student purchases a gun from a gun dealer.”

None of those would have stopped this particular shooter, even if everyone, including him, obeyed the law (up to the point where he started shooting). He no longer went that school, so the notice, for whatever good it might have done, (None)

Typical liberal gun grabber nonsense. Punish those who had nothing to do with the crime.

Establish a system whereby university officials are notified when a student purchases a gun from a gun dealer.

First of all, it's none of their f#$&ing business if a law abiding student purchases a gun. Second, what are they going to do with this info? Force the student out of school? Force them into "counseling"? This burns my ass so bad!
