Crowd cheers advice to turn off TV, skip Popeyes for breakfast
FORT WORTH, Texas -- On the campaign trail, Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama talks about how he would use the bully pulpit if president, and he offered a demonstration Thursday when he drew wild cheers as he told a mostly African-American crowd that parents need to shape up, turn off the TV, help their kids with their homework and stop letting them grow fat eating Popeyes chicken for breakfast.
"It's not good enough for you to say to your child, 'Do good in school,' and then when that child comes home, you got the TV set on, you got the radio on, you don't check their homework, there is not a book in the house, you've got the video game playing," said Obama while in Beaumont, in southeast Texas.
"So turn off the TV set, put the video game away. Buy a little desk or put that child by the kitchen table. Watch them do their homework. If they don't know how to do it, give them help. If you don't know how to do it, call the teacher. Make them go to bed at a reasonable time. Keep them off the streets. Give ' em some breakfast. Come on. ... You know I am right."
Can change happen with words? That's a core question being raised about the Obama candidacy.
"I've got to talk about us a little bit," said Obama. "We can't keep on feeding our children junk all day long, giving them no exercise. They are overweight by the time they are 4 or 5 years old, and then we are surprised when they get sick."
Obama -- who exercises and is careful about what he eats -- said obese children need to improve their nutrition habits, invoking the name of a chain that makes delicious fried chicken.
"I know how hard it is to get kids to eat properly," Obama said. "But I also know that if folks letting our children drink eight sodas a day, which some parents do, or, you know, eat a bag of potato chips for lunch, or Popeyes for breakfast.
"Y'all have Popeyes out in Beaumont? I know some of y'all you got that cold Popeyes out for breakfast. I know. That's why y'all laughing. ... You can't do that. Children have to have proper nutrition. That affects also how they study, how they learn in school."
Obama has delivered "tough love'' messages before about personal responsibility, but he seemed to revel in his "truth-telling" while campaigning in Beaumont, on a day that also took him to Austin and Fort Worth in advance of Tuesday's crucial primaries.
As Obama stumped in the Lone Star State to Texas-size crowds -- he packed in 13,000 people at the convention center here Thursday night -- his campaign was downplaying any presumption that he will emerge in a few days as the all-but-certain Democratic nominee.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton "is working tirelessly, as is Bill Clinton, in both Ohio and Texas; these races are extraordinarily tight," Obama said during a press conference on his plane en route to Beaumont. The Obama team was shocked to lose the New Hampshire primary in January, and since then, Obama has curbed the bravado that bubbled up in the Granite State.
Obama resisted an invitation by a reporter to write the Clinton campaign obituary. Said Obama, "Remember New Hampshire?"
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Obama is right on this one- maybe he will turn into a Conservative when he grows up.

Bill Cosby says it= "Awful, how dare he air black people's laundry out in front of white people. How can a rich guy like Cosby attack poor black welfare mothers?"
Obama says same thing= "Oh my GOD, he's so smart, and what a revelation. He's starting a new dialogue on race. He's the messiah."
So he does a Bill Cosby impersonation. Big deal.

He doesn’t deserve kudos for stating the obvious, even if he is a RAT. The problem with Obama, like most Dems, refuse to pinpoint the most important SINGLE cause of the cul;tural degradation in much of the black community. That cause is the destruction of the 2 parent black family. The precipitate cause of this tragedy was the welfare state created by LBJ and (mostly) the DemocRAT Party. But since Barack He who must not be middle named Obama wants to extend and expand the welfare state to all of America, he is careful to avoid drawing the correct conclusions.
When you point out that the Democratic Party’s entire history and policies have been antithetical to the best interests of the black community, and that to the extent that a major political party is responsible for any political and civil liberty that black people have, they owe it to the Republican Party, and even when you can prove that historically and factually the most amazing case of political cognitive dissonance then occurs.
The common response is, well that may be true but only the Democrats are “for us”. They usually go on to an entirely erroneous understanding of Nixon’s Southern strategy, a distortion of Berry Goldwater’s principled opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and completely ignore the fact that the Democratic Party was founded amongst other things, to extend slavery into the territory’s. The Democratic Party opposed 13, 14, and 15th amendment to the United States Constitution, reconstruction, every bit of foundational civil rights legislation from 1866 to 1968, instituted Jim Crow in the Southern states, refused to enact antilynching laws, and most importantly destroyed the two-parent black family with Lyndon Johnson’s welfare state. When you point out the fact that the modern-day Democratic Party is home to the pro-abortion forces that have enhanced the wildly disproportionate abortion rate in the black community, that doesn’t seem to register either.
The black community is in the throes of the worst political brainwashing outside of the Soviet Union and I just don’t know what can be done about it. I constantly engaged in debates with people in my community and they are determined to vote for Democrats despite the clear and present evidence of their utterly destructive policies. The staggeringly high level of political cognitive dissonance amongst my people is frightening.

We can grant that he picked “y’all” up in Chicago, but that raises the good question as to how credibly the message of scholastic achievement can be delivered in “street” English.
“Do good in school, y’all,” is a self-negating message, at least where standard usage is concerned.
I agree, but the destruction of the black family is a direct result of the degradation of black culture that occurred in the post-WW2 era. With the coming of the civil rights era, the achievements and examples of the heroes of American black history — men like Booker T. Washington, Dr. Charles Drew, et al — were relegated to the dustbin by a new generation of “revolutionary” black leaders. The assimilationist movement was derided as being hopelessly “Uncle Tom”, and was replaced by a bullshit “Black Is Beautiful” separationist ideology among black leaders. As part of this pseudo-African rebel movement came the idolization of the rebel in black culture — the “mack” Stagger Lee stereotype. Pimps, “superfly” dandies, thieves, revolutionaries, and rapists became the new heroes of the Black Power movement. White America, which had signed on to the civil rights movement out of sympathy to the Christian, hat-and-suit wearing, ambitious Negro, suddenly found itself faced with a population of angry, ghetto-burning, beret-wearing revolutionaries — which could no longer be safely criticized.
And so the slow-motion race war began, as whites (and the remaining Christian, suit-and-hat wearing ambitious Negoes) retreated to the exurbs, leaving the rest of black America to be led by poverty pimps, drug lords, and tribal gang leaders – none of which had any conception of culture. “Liberated” from the “chains” of marriage and family by white guilt money from the government, the black male returned to the traditional African social pattern of harem building, vendetta, and the acquistion and display of wealth. The collapse of the black family occurred immediately thereafter.
(A similar cultural collapse occurred around the same time in the white community, and for similar reasons. However, the white middle class developed economic and social methods of containment that limited the damage caused by decivilized whites to specific geographic areas.)
America’s race problems cannot be fixed so long as the majority of the black people in this country reject Western civilization and its culture. White people talk about how bad racism is, but the fact that the suburbs exist is proof that white people with children prefer to run away from the problem rather than confront it. Deep down, most white people are deeply frightened of blacks — and for good reasons. Violent crime by blacks against whites is epidemic, yet to complain (or even state the facts) is “racist”. So they run, farther and farther away, pretending that the problem won’t follow them. But where will they go when there’s no place left to run?
Black ghetto culture is incompatible with civilized life; it will either die, or civilized life will die. The only solution to the problem of race in America lies with the elimination of black ghetto culture — and that can only be accomplished by American blacks themselves. Until a black leader arises who can inspire his fellow blacks to “go Oreo”, there will be no peace. If the current situation is allowed to continue, the possibility of seeing South Africa-style conditions — racially-exclusive fortress cities, open racial conflict, and the breakdown of public order — exists.
Stagger Lee has to die if America is to live. It’s that simple.
I just had a thought: All males born after December 31, 1959 by law have to register for Selective Service (aka the draft). Do we know if Senator Barack Obama registered? He was born August 4th of 1961. If not, why not?
