They do not occupy the position in the hiphop genre that the Beatles and Rolling Stones do in classic rock or that Strait and Jackson do in Nashville country.
Much like film or television or cuisine or science fiction, it isn't all trash.

The stupidity of these people astonishes me. They spend their live glorifying “gangsta” lifestyles are then “shocked, shocked I tell you!” when someone they know is slaughtered. True Darwinism.

True, but they glorify murder in general. Women are bitches and whores. They never seem to stop to consider that murdered women are often someone else’s mother.

One of the premier funk acts of the 1970s, and one whose records have been endlessly sampled by hiphop producers, is an Ohio outfit with the ironic name of Slave.
GRAND FUNKMASTER (also note that their aliases very closely resemble the titles of KKK members.)
The original hiphop grandmaster - Grandmaster Flash (best tracks: "The Message", "White Lines", "Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel") adopted that moniker as a chess reference.
There are a few others who followed with that title, but it fell out of style in the early '80s.

Funny you should ask. There are a number of schools that offer advanced coursework in studio production techniques associated with hiphop: mixing from variously format analogue sources, sampling, etc.
A prominent hiphop producer/DJ - professionally known as 9th Wonder (a inside reference to Grandmaster Flash's other nickname: "8th Wonder"), but with the government name of Patrick Douthit - teaches advanced-level coursework in hiphop at NCCU in Durham.
Certain MCs like Biggie Smalls, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Nas cultivate/d a "thug from the streets" image, but are considered to be inventive and clever lyricists.
The beauty and the bane of hiphop, of course, is that anyone can try his hand at it - with the result that the hiphop market is glutted with substandard product.
Some MCs do consider that - like Common and Kanye West, who tend to eschew and criticize such language, and who are among the best-selling MCs of recent years.

This makes me think of the mafia, for some reason. Imagine if they put their doings to music. While I'm not sure of the prevalence of killing romantic rivals, the criminal mentality is the same regardless of the color.
The mafia has been romanticized in a similar fashion when you really think about it.

Actually, Ice-T (AKA Tracy Lauren Marrow) currently seen on TV’s Law & Order, had a lovely tune on his album Body Count (Which was famous for the melodious single “Cop Killer”)entitled “Momma’s Gonna Die Tonight”
Let me correct myself—It’s Momma’s Gotta Die Tonight” not “Gonna” I realized my typo—it’s tough keeping track of those subtle musical nuances.
It was, not surprisingly, marketed to a white heavy metal audience that was quite familiar with bloody Oedipal themes.
I remember a coworker of mine at the time recommending the album to me because: "You white boys love that crazy metal ****, right? I think Ice-T lost his damn mind."

Absolutely. Many who reject hiphop as unredeemable garbage eat up shows like The Sopranos - and not just because they appreciate the deftness of the characterizations.
