Arab-America’s Store

Hamad, 34, has shopped at Wal-Mart before, but never one like this. She is overcome with nostalgia as she spots Nido powdered milk and Al Haloub Cow, canned meat she calls the "Arabic Spam." "My father loves this," she says. "People from war-torn countries, this is what you lived on when you couldn't go out of the house to shop." This Wal-Mart, though, isn't in a war zone. It's in Dearborn, Mich., home to nearly a half-million Arab-Americans, the largest concentration of Arabs outside the Middle East.

I think this is smart by Walmart. I also think that your reaction is what Newsweeks is trying to aim at. Notice how they only mention the other places (like the hitching post for the Amish community) but went into detail and focused on the Muslim Walmart. Newsweek is trying to prey on the fears of Americans everywhere and get a negative reaction to Walmart.

Maybe other stores should start noticing the revolutionary practices of Walmart instead of just trying to tear them down.

Nothing wrong with catering to the 'ethnic' food preferences in the neighborhood.
Just hope this Walmart still puts our their 'Merry Christmas' displays in December...

My Indian Father-In-Law told me the other day that the Wal-Mart in Mississauga, Ontario is now selling Saris, Selwar Kameez, etc. If you see a need for it, sell it! I buy Indian food & ingredients at a Patel Bros. store here on Long Island, NY. The nice old ladies at the cash registers always do a double take- a 6’3” white guy buying Idli mix, chutneys, and the latest Bollywood gossip mags. My Father-In -Law’s famly is Muslim, but most of them have left India and are now all over the place. When he & his wife came to the states in the early 60s, they lived in Erie, PA. He started carrying a small bottle of Tabasco with him everywhere, becuase he couldn’t find any Indian ingredients.

I went to U of M Dearborn for a few Automotive courses and could not believe my ears: Arabic and English in equal proportions.

Compare that with my main campus U of M Ann Arbor where you see no Arabs but many Jews.

A strange dichotomy

They were worried about undercutting the local Arab merchants? Curious that they weren’t concerned about hundreds of local small town merchants for the last 30 years. Seems a little hypocritical (or is it just pandering?).

Gee. Wal-Mart decides to sell what people want to buy. What a revolutionary concept. I’m no fan of Wally World, but I won’t condemn this.

You have a stronger constitution than I. One week of spicy shrimp for breakfast was enough to end my cross-cultural fling.

You musn’t have a lot of electronic devices around the house. Better check your GM/Ford/Chrysler car also. My Nissan truck was built in Tennessee.

I have a friend who is Indian. When we go out to Indian restaurants he cracks me up. He starts sweating up a storm when eating spicy stuff. He is constantly wiping his forehead with his napkin!!

Nido powdered milk is somehow indicative of catering to Muslims?
Nah.
It’s made by Nestle and used by everyone from Hispanics to Indians to folks in the Philippines in cooking.

Really poor reporting.
