I didn’t write those words. Maybe you should take it up with the Author.

Well, it would explain why he dropped those five commandments.

The author of the article disagrees with you. I suspect others do as well. I don’t really care tho, just pointing out that you *could* be wrong.

"The author of the article disagrees with you."

I was quoting Scripture and the Author I was referring to was God.

I’m sure you believe that you’re the final word on what the Bible actually means, but it might surprise you to know that your interpretation is not universally accepted.
However, if God actually talks to you and assures you that you’re right, please let me know.

Pharoh was even higher; there were no plagues. It was all one big nasty trip.

In fact, maybe G-d is high right now and we are all just figments of His hallucinations — surely some deep-thinking degreed researcher can figure this out! /sarc

What hallucinogenic plants were available in the desert of the Sinai 3000 years ago? It is a DESERT.

There are hallucinogenic plants all over the place.

However the theory seems to have no basis other then the researchers own idle musings.

What was this guy smoking when he wrote the article?

Mmmmm.. just answered my own question.

” Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the “burning bush,” suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.”

it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe,

What I find very sad is the fact that a young lady in my office, whom I believe to be an observant Jew, reacted to the story with "Oh yeah, I can believe that. Ancient people used drugs all the time. The burning bush was probably a hallucinogenic vision." To which I countered "OR, maybe it was a supernatural event???"

Sigh...

Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy. "As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

Several travesties of intellect occur in this episode. First, we have a man who reportedly dedicates himself to cognitive psychology, is a Professor at the Hebrew University, and then proceeds to claim Jewish temple worship included the use of psychedelics.

The Old Testament/Torah reports of Moses very well describe both spiritual and physical events tied to the independent volition of a supernatural, Sovereign God.

Whereas the natural man doesn't understand the supernatural Spiritual life, because he isn't yet regenerated in his spirit, in all of human efforts to understand such phenomenon, a professional in the environment of dedicated study to the mind/Body problem, with Hebrew ancestry, and afforded the opportunity to study cognitive psychology, probably has more resources available to him than most any other person to glean vast amounts of insight into true human anthropology.

Yet, each of these basic issues, the charlatan can not produce anything more than an appeal to hallucination and drug induced hallucination to justify the Scriptural reports.

One counterargument is that being under the influence of drugs by any priest, let alone a high priest in OT protocols, was a capital offense in relationship with God when representing the people of Israel to God.

The Israelites under their own law would have killed Moses had he been so intoxicated, not to mention God Himself would have probably dealt more quickly and obviously to such a situation.

One can also dispute the claims simply by the number of very real cursings inflicted on the Egyptians which they suffered, even though they didn't believe in God. The death of the firstborn in all the land during Passover, was something much more than hallucination or even a mass induced hysteria.

Perhaps one of the largest travesties, is that the Scriptures provided from Moses, offer some of the most revealing insights discerning between a soulish and spiritual understanding of reality. Reducing such reports simply to drug induced ramblings reveals the author has never given much more though than a third grader to the trichotomous perspective of the Mind-Body problem, and worse, ignores some of the most veritable testimony to its existence.

Anti-social Samson
by Alison Motluk
February 14, 2001
Eric Altschuler from the University of California at San Diego and his colleagues say that Samson showed signs of no fewer than six of the seven behaviours associated with antisocial personality disorder. Samson routinely got into fights, and once killed 1000 Philistines single-handedly and then gloated over it, showing no remorse. He also showed a reckless disregard for his own safety when he told Delilah, a woman who'd tried to kill him three times before, the secret of his strength. The researchers note that Samson also burned Philistine fields, which showed both his impulsivity and his inability to conform to social norms. He was deceitful, not telling his parents, for instance, that he got honey from the carcass of a lion. And like many people with ASPD, Samson behaved badly as a child: setting things on fire, torturing animals, stealing, and bullying other children. A whole chapter is devoted to Samson's mother being warned by angels not to drink while she's pregnant.
Gee, maybe it was fetal alcohol syndrome. : ) Or an April Fool joke. Now from that November:
Old Testament prophet showed epileptic symptoms
by Alison Motluk
November 17, 2001
Eric Altschuler, a neuroscientist at the University of California at San Diego, now says that neurologically, Ezekiel displayed some obvious signs of epilepsy, such as frequent fainting spells and episodes of not being able to speak. For instance, he wrote compulsively, a trait known as hypergraphia. Ezekiel was also extremely religious, another characteristic associated with this form of epilepsy. While many Biblical figures are pious, none was as aggressively religious as Ezekiel, says Altschuler. Other signs of epilepsy can include aggression, delusions and pedantic speech - and the man had them all, Altschuler told a meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego. It also serves as further evidence that this disease is genetic in origin. "If there were no old cases," he says, "we'd have to ask if there was something wrong in our environment."

How does he expect us to take his credentials seriously?
