Russian bomber aircraft approached a US aircraft carrier off the Korean coast on Wednesday and was intercepted by American fighter jets -- the second such incident in less than a month, US defense officials said.

According to the US officials, a Russian bomber came within three to five nautical miles and flew 2,000 feet above the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships. Two US F-18 fighters were launched to intercept the Russian aircraft and escort it out of the area, according to one defense official. (Reuters)

Hopefully, followed by many splash's in the water below.....well, maybe a few big splash's, too.

Lets start overflying their carrier groups with stealth fighters and bombers.

Oh, that’s right, they don’t have any!

They won’t do it for long if we shoot them down every time they do this.

Is it the Nimitz that is being given to India in exchange for a large fighter contract, trumping the Russian carrier deal?

That was more Saudi Arabia's doing - fed up with constant cartel cheaters.

3 to 5 miles is pretty flipping close at 500 knots/hr. Should’ve splashed that bomber because the next time it will be 2 to 3 miles...then an accidental release of a missile. Then all that brown stuff hits the fan blades.

Don't tell that to the crew of the Admiral Kuznetsov.

Damn. My kid leaves again soon for a WESPAC. I was in the Navy, stationed at SUBASE Pearl during the cold war...these stories give me flashbacks. I guess I had 15 Soviet Navy readiness classes. Yikes. I really wish this problem would resolve itself. I guess I’m going to have to vote for McQueeg after all.

Assuming this happened north of Korea, why would the carrier group be traveling so close to Russia?

Why waste jet fuel when a SAM (missile) or two would do the job??

“That was more Saudi Arabia’s doing “
It was a Saudi thing , but it was because Reagan jawboned them to death.

The armchair admirals and generals abound yet again! It is international airspace. It happened during the Cold War and it never went away. No one is going to shoot them down. Russian battle groups are observed and monitored in exactly the same way. Even Iranian P-3 Orions conduct visual recce on Coalition naval vessels in the Persian Gulf.
