Wildlife officials: Bakersfield development threatens cactus
AP on Bakersfield Californian ^ | 3/6/08 | AP

State wildlife officials have told city planners that an approved development slated to be built on Bakersfield's northeast bluffs threatens an endangered cactus.

The California Department of Fish and Game says a planned housing subdivision known as The Canyons would wipe out about 100 Bakersfield cactus plants, a species found only around the city.

The agency said the cactus could not recover from the loss.

If the project goes forward, the agency has threatened to void a 1994 agreement with the city allowing developers to destroy some endangered species in exchange for fees to conserve habitat elsewhere.

We’d never survive as a a nation if we didn’t have the Bakersfield cactus poking us in the arse, yaknow. ;-)

Is this a peek at what the future holds for carbon credits?

the cactus thing aside, it’s curious that they’re continuing to develop subdivisons with so many vacant houses on the market.

Some species are more successful than others. If a species is found only within one small environmental niche, then it is not successful and may end up being pushed aside by a more successful species.

The Democrats are very big on teaching Evolution, but they don't like to see it practiced.

Perhaps the state agency could transplant them elsewhere in the Bakersfield area. Without work gloves, preferably.

This is an issue that local enviros have been fighting over for several years now.

Whenever land grabbers run out of options, they always “discover” some damn rat or toad or weed that no one ever mentioned during the preceding five years of argument.

This racket has got to be stopped somehow or our nation is on the short path to ruin.

It's getting to the point where the only thing the Greenies are going to understand is that two dark nights after another piece of nonsense like this, the California Department of Fish and Game receives a bag full of 100 cacti via anonymous UPS delivery.

I live in the mountains above Bakersfield. Last time I drove down there were unfinished houses everywhere. Why they want to start a new development when they haven’t finished all the others they started is a bit strange.
