ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: While in Casper, Wyo., today Sen. Barack Obama ruled out the possibility being a vice presidential candidate during an interview with CBS' Montana affiliate KTVQ.
Here is a transcript of what he said.
Q: Youve raised $55 million in February and in your speech today you said "I was against the war in 03, 04, 05 -- all the way on through 2010, and you specifically mentioned Hillary Clinton and John McCain. Could you ever see yourself on the same ticket as Senator Clinton?
A: Well, you know, I think its premature. You wont see me as a vice presidential candidate -- you know, Im running for president. We have won twice as many states as Senator Clinton, and have a higher popular vote, and I think we can maintain our delegate count -- but you know, what Im really focused on right now, because all that stuff is premature, is winning this nomination and changing the country. And I think thats what people here are concerned about. How are you going to provide health care to every American? So I spend a lot of time talking about the plan I wanted to put in place that would not only lower costs for those who already have health insurance, but also make sure people who dont have health insurance can get health care as good as the health care I have as a member of Congress. Those are the kinds of issues that really make a difference in peoples lives, and were going to keep on talking about them.
I am so sick of this Marxist, racist schmuck.
Republicans are more likely to vote against Clinton and/or Obama than Democrats are to vote against McCain, or at least stay home. Many see McCain as a moderate.
That is why Republicans should do everything they can to assure that Hillary is the RAT nominee.
Even if Osama would take the VP slot it will drive his voters nuts and they would have riots everywhere.
All it would take is a couple “Driving Miss Daisy” cartoons or some with Osama in the back of the bus to set them off.
A Hillary nomination now would be a huge gift in Nov.
That’s what I meant by saying the candidates’ weaknesses would be magnified by having them both on the ticket. You’re absolutely right-—their combined negatives would be horrific.
However, the question is whether that would translate to a meaningful increase in the number of people not voting for the ticket.
IOW, would there be enough of an increase in the number of voters who wouldn’t vote for the ticket to make a difference?
Or would about the same number of people who wouldn’t vote for one or the other before just *really, really, really* not want to vote for the ticket now?
I don’t know the answer to that, but my sense is that the combination would deepen the loathing in many people, but be the “last straw” against the ticket for a much smaller number of people.
(Remember, Obama and the Beast are both acceptable to their base on their policies. They only part ways on likeability issues.)
OTOH, regardless of which spot he has on the ticket, say Obama is able to increase turn-out in the black community by a large percentage, this in itself may compensate for the fewer voters who won’t hold their nose to vote for Hildy even if they like Obama.
Hildy may have a similar effect on turn-out of senior women. There may be many more of them willing to vote for her regardless of her spot on the ticket, compared to the number of voters who won’t hold their nose to vote for her because they don’t like Obama.
So while their negatives may cause a chunk of voters in the middle to drop out, each candidate possibly could increase turn-out in their own bases to compensate for the middle-voter drop-outs.
Just my thoughts.
O really, Hussein?
Meet the press interview from 2006:
MR. RUSSERT: So you will not run for president or vice president in 2008?
SEN. OBAMA: I will not.
You already broke one half of your pledge...might as well go the whole 9 yards if Hillary decides to save you a seat in the back of the clinton bus.
The mere fact that Obama has become a Senator and candidate for President — is an undeniable indicator of the decline in intellect of the American voters....
Our forefathers could never have predicted the electorate would become such easily manipulated or deceived dunces.....
But, perhaps they DID envision all the fainting women!
No way.
If Obama went on the ticket, he would support it. He would use his considerable charm to charm his supporters. Eventually, they would accept that if he had made peace with the Beast “for the good of the country” and so on, they could too.
It would be very easy. Obama’s supporters will follow his lead. If he says it’s a good thing for him to serve as VP, they will accept that and support him, thus propelling the Beast into the White House.
Good catch.
Hildy made her own pledges, IIRC.
So did Bubba about running for prez when he was Guvner of Arkansas.
Fool me once . . .
I agree. I think he does have a chance at pulling in a fair number of moderate dems, Reagan dems, Hispanics, and...well...people who just cannot bring themselves to vote for either a woman, or a black man , for the office of the president. (Hey, whatever it takes to keep either of those two very dangerous people out of the oval office.)
Well...This is the “year of firsts”. Usually it would be ridiculous to even suggest that a candidate perceived as liberal would NOT want to ‘balance’ the ticket with a moderate, preferably from a different geographic area.So it’s entirely possible the DNC will sail into uncharted water with a both a presidential nominee AND a VP perceived as liberal/leftwing.Will BHO and HRC both be willing to play along, or would both calculate it would be better if McCain wins this year so they’d have another shot 4 years down the road at the top spot (as some have suggested.) What would be great-ie, no way in hell will it happen-is if the DNC insanely tries to go for a “compromise” candidate-ie, another white man, even the Sainted Al Gore. Now THAT would make 1968 look like the teddy bear’s picnic!
I guess we’ll have to disagree on that. He has a bunch of mindless voters that want him as President only because he’s black.
The Leftwing moonbats hate Hillary and would go nuts with him in the back of the bus.
They are smart enough to know that if Hillary were elected she would destroy any chance of Osama ever being POTUS.
One of those Communists will be the nominee and Republicans are in better shape if its the beast.
It is the height of arrogance and presumption for Hillary to allow that she would be willing to “consider” Obama as her VP, when she is running behind in the delegates and popular vote.
If Obama maintains his lead going into the convention, there is no way he will yield to Her Majesty without a bitter fight that would massively alienate blacks, who would rightly see it as the “man” once again putting them in their place. The powers that be are well aware of this.
Likewise, there is little chance Obama will consider Hillary as VP under all but the most dire of circumstances. Letting her & Bill back into the White House would be suicidal. He’d be looking over his shoulder the whole time knowing that they, for their part, would do their very best to elevate the office of Vice President over that of President.
One thing is virtually certain: Hillary & Bill will not hesitate to cause a no-holds-barred, knock down drag out fight at the convention in order to prevail. There are powerful forces arraigned on either side of this battle, and it will be very interesting to see how it plays out.
Great news. Hope we don’t see you in any position in government.
Thanks for the pics.
A horse’s head is a strong message.
Next time, you’re sleeping wit the fishes.
Only if he can carry on the Global Warming torch from Al Gore would he even remotely be VP material. He got to go for the big Lewinsky.
I believe that and almost every white person to whom I have broached the subject seems to believe the same. What does it say about this country when we have a woman who is seen this way running for President?
Well, for one thing it says that some people believe that the Clintons are connected to some very bad people who can make bad things happen to Clinton opponents.
Barack Obama's life isn't in danger from some white racist who wants to kill him from being America's first black President, his life is in danger from the Clinton machine.
The lone nut case or small group you can defend against. A well connected and well financed crimminal mafia is much harder to defend against. Witnesses end up dead, and investigators get paid off or end up dead themselves.
Not a possibility, but I'm sure I could be 100% better than those 2 socialists.
The great news is the fact that I like Barack taking it to Hillary psychologically in the war of words.
Good thread. Thanks for participating.
“Now THAT would make 1968 look like the teddy bears picnic!”
You’re REALLY going to enjoy this interlude/classic. Thanks to Hugh Fitzgerald at jihadwatch.
