2 Charged in UNC Student Leader Slaying

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) - Two suspects were charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the killing of the University of North Carolina's student body president. Demario James Atwater, 21, of Durham, was arrested and ordered held without bond. Police said they are still searching for the second suspect, 17-year-old Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran declined to say whether Lovett was the subject of an intense police standoff Wednesday afternoon in nearby Durham. City Councilman Eugene Brown said it appears the standoff was resolved without an arrest.

Police in Durham refused to comment, referring all questions about the standoff to police in Chapel Hill.

Shackled at the ankle and waist and with a public defender at his side, Atwater whispered "yes" when asked whether he understood the charge against him. His next court appearance was scheduled for March 24.

"I hope the arrest can ease the minds of some in the community," District Attorney Jim Woodall said.

Messages left with the Orange County public defenders office were not returned Wednesday.

Curran would not say which of the suspects shot and killed Eve Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., who was found a week ago lying on a street about a mile from campus. The biology and political science major had been shot several times, including once in the right temple.

In the day after Carson's death, police focused their investigation on a suspect pictured in several surveillance photos using her ATM card.

The Board of Trustees at North Carolina offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in her death, and police received hundreds of tips after the first two photos were released over the weekend.

Carson was a prestigious Morehead-Cain scholar at North Carolina, where she was remembered by thousands who gathered Thursday at two campus memorial services. Hundreds of mourners filled the First United Methodist Church in Athens on Sunday at a memorial service in her hometown.

The university said Wednesday a third memorial service will be held next week at the campus basketball arena.

No, we’re lethal injection. We haven’t used the electric chair since 1938.

We had a case down the river about 10 years ago. A terminally ill White woman was beaten and died of her injuries. Their defense was that the woman's 3 yr old son had provoked them beyond reason by supposedly uttering the dreaded "n word" that he heard them using.

The lesser perps got about a year and the "big man" pled to voluntary manslaughter and got 5 yrs. The prosecutor said that she was dying anyway so no big deal

In another case 14 month old Ryan Hacke was shot in the head in his Mother's car while the perp, out on bond for a home invasion and rape, was supposedly shooting at rival gang members. The jury bought the act and convicted him of involuntary manslaughter. He got 7 yrs.

Pittsburgh PA is a mecca for black on White violence yet you are called a racist if you notice.

“Any men left in this country? They would take care of this, real quick.”

The courts of this country have made it so that vigilante justice is usually prosecuted heavier than the original crime. These guys will plea out, and maybe get 2nd degree murder charges. I’m sure we’ll hear about how the grew up in a “rough” part of Durham, and that “poverty” influenced their decisions.

Of course if I, as a white, educated, military member felt upset about that, I’m a racist. And if I do the justice that SHOULD be done, not only am I getting first degree murder but I’m committing a “hate crime” as well.

BTW, as someone who grew up in North Carolina, I can tell you this. I would not go anywhere within driving distance of the People’s Republic of Chapel Hill. There are more communists there than the Kremlin. And neighboring Durham is a cesspool of humanity, which I can guarantee is where these thugs came from. And if you call them thugs, the Commies at Chapel Hill will let you know how you are an ignorant, capitalist, racist pig.

No thanks, I’ll take my alma mater, UNC Charlotte.

As soon as I saw the picture at the ATM, I knew these were Durham gangbangers who drove up to Chapel Hill for some easy pickings.

This was almost certainly an initiation for the 17-year-old. Dollars to doughnuts he's the trigger man.

I've lived in and around Raleigh for over ten years, but I can count on two hands the number of times I've been to Durham or Chapel Hill, both of which are less than 30 minutes away. The only time I go to Durham is for baseball, and I've been to Chapel Hill twice.

I just googled her and found “the charges were reduced to second degree murder. Why? Because the killer was provoked by his victim’s attempt to defend herself.”

First he assaulted her. She pepper-sprayed him in defense and then he shot her 5 times. Unbelievable!

You put this case next to the one in LA of the high school football star killed 100+ feet from his front door by a gang-banger, and it clearly shows our system of justice needs work.

Jailing the slime, only to have them emerge from behind those evil walls worse than they went in, is an insult to civilization.

Take a life, lose yours.

Because the killer was provoked by his victim’s attempt to defend herself.”

OMG, no, that is a bald-faced lie. That blog you found doesn't EVEN come CLOSE to describing the judicial atrocity that occurred in that case.

The REAL story is that the jury was made of 8 white people and 4 black people, and the 4 black people held out for 2nd degree for the simple reason that "white people don't understand black rage."

I am not making this up. I was working at IBM at the time, and one of the black jurors worked in the same test lab where I worked and was interviewed in the local paper, as well as one of the white jurors who spelled it out.

Basically, the white jurors were led to believe by the judge that there was a chance that the guy could actually be set free if they didn't convict of something, and the 8 white people eventually caved into the "black rage justifies this sort of thing" being held out for by the black members.

The blog you cite has completely glossed over the real story there.

I hope there will be some justice but I wouldn’t count on it. If they don’t get sentence to death I hope Nancy Grace and the rest of the media react with the same coverage they are giving the story now.

I am almost surprised this is still a big national story. I thought it wasn’t “PC” enough. Though I have to wonder how they decide what’s safe to air and what isn’t. If you ask me the rape/killings of that college couple in Knoxville was even worse than this Carson case, but to my knowledge that got zero coverage at the time from the cable nets, and the national media in general.

This murderous punk - is exactly the stereotype keeping the dreaded “N” word alive and meaningful.....

He's from Durham — the city where the notorious “88” Duke Professors attempted to lynch 3 innocent white boys on the basis of a black whore's false claim of rape..... Calling is a racist crime...

I now wonder if these same “88” racist fools and worse - will see any racist content in the murder of a white girl by this black POS?
Will they call for his castration - as they did the Lacrosse players?
I think not....
That black whore still lives - and has not been charged with any crime....
This white girl is dead - and committed no crime.

Duke University and others have ALREADY paid 10’s millions to the damaged parties — with 10’s of millions still be sought in civil courts....from the city of Durham and more from Duke University...

Where does the family of this young girl go for “justice”...
I'm coming to believe that society, law enforcement, city and state government should be held criminally liable for the fact they have permitted so many criminals to remain on the streets....

The “Justice System's” “compassion” for the criminals has not bode well for the rest of society......

We had one incident like this at one of the frats when I was at UNC Charlotte. Two “non-students” (thugs) showed up. Of course, they were loud and provocative. One pulled a gun and threatened one of the brothers who was trying to convince them to leave. Five minutes later, the brother is on the ground with a gunshot wound to the leg, and the perp has about 30 people taking turns standing on him.

These incidents are getting old, and the people coddling these punks are, in my opinion, just as guilty of murder as the gunmen themselves.
