Obama's Pastor: God Damn America, U.S. to Blame for 9/11

Obama's Pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Has a History of What Even Obama's Campaign Aides Say Is 'Inflammatory Rhetoric'

By BRIAN ROSS and REHAB EL-BURI

March 13, 2008—

Sen. Barack Obama's pastor says blacks should not sing "God Bless America" but "God damn America."

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's south side, has a long history of what even Obama's campaign aides concede is "inflammatory rhetoric," including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism."

In a campaign appearance earlier this month, Sen. Obama said, "I don't think my church is actually particularly controversial." He said Rev. Wright "is like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with," telling a Jewish group that everyone has someone like that in their family.

Rev. Wright married Obama and his wife Michelle, baptized their two daughters and is credited by Obama for the title of his book, "The Audacity of Hope."

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright's sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans.

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," he said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda's attacks because of its own terrorism.

"We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.

"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation.

Sen. Obama told the New York Times he was not at the church on the day of Rev. Wright's 9/11 sermon. "The violence of 9/11 was inexcusable and without justification," Obama said in a recent interview. "It sounds like he was trying to be provocative," Obama told the paper.

Rev. Wright, who announced his retirement last month, has built a large and loyal following at his church with his mesmerizing sermons, mixing traditional spiritual content and his views on contemporary issues.

"I wouldn't call it radical. I call it being black in America," said one congregation member outside the church last Sunday.

"He has impacted the life of Barack Obama so much so that he wants to portray that feeling he got from Rev. Wright onto the country because we all need something positive," said another member of the congregation.

Rev. Wright, who declined to be interviewed by ABC News, is considered one of the country's 10 most influential black pastors, according to members of the Obama campaign.

Obama has praised at least one aspect of Rev. Wright's approach, referring to his "social gospel" and his focus on Africa, "and I agree with him on that."

Sen. Obama declined to comment on Rev. Wright's denunciations of the United States, but a campaign religious adviser, Shaun Casey, appearing on "Good Morning America" Thursday, said Obama "had repudiated" those comments.

In a statement to ABCNews.com, Obama's press spokesman Bill Burton said, "Sen. Obama has said repeatedly that personal attacks such as this have no place in this campaign or our politics, whether they're offered from a platform at a rally or the pulpit of a church. Sen. Obama does not think of the pastor of his church in political terms. Like a member of his family, there are things he says with which Sen. Obama deeply disagrees. But now that he is retired, that doesn't detract from Sen. Obama's affection for Rev. Wright or his appreciation for the good works he has done."

Many US Christians need to get a grip. The Bible does not revolve around the United States.

THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY

********The protagonist of the story is a (fictional) young United States Army lieutenant named Philip Nolan, who developed a friendship with the visiting Aaron Burr. When Burr is tried for treason (as he actually was in 1807), Nolan was tried as an accomplice. During his testimony, Nolan bitterly renounced his nation, angrily shouting “Damn the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!” (When the novel was first published, the word “damn” was considered too obscene for publication.) Upon conviction, the judge icily granted Nolan his wish: he was to spend the rest of his life on warships of the United States Navy, in exile, with no right to ever again set foot on U.S. soil, and with no mention ever again made to him about his country.

The sentence is carried out to the letter. For the rest of his life, Nolan is transported from ship to ship, living his life out as a prisoner on the high seas, never once being allowed back in a home port. None of the sailors in whose custody Nolan remains are allowed speak to him about the U.S., and his newspapers are censored.********

The above excerpt from the aforementioned book, THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, would be a good punishment for a person who hates America and chooses to damn Her.

We can only hope he will, but Africa doesn’t have the perks America does. He hates us but loves the perks. Go figure.

And it would have been even funnier coming from a black man. I loved his humor.

He said his favorite judge was Roberts, so hopefully he’ll appoint judges who are at least as good as Roberts seems to be.

Yet there are some on here that claim there’s no difference between Obama/Hillary and McCain. That is insanity!

Interesting that THE BIBLE calls us to be a blessing to others. And yet this man calls for damning.

The Bible tells you to love your enemies (at least give them food and something to drink) and it will be as heaping coals on their head.
And yet he calls for the opposite. (more like heaping coals on whites heads, and taking their food and drink.)

If I was still living outside Chicago, I would definitely be tempted to organize something like this, but alas, I’m 4 hours away now, and our vehicle needs a little work before I’d feel comfortable driving to Chicago in the snow!

As you said, it would need to be a large group. Especially seeing as Chicago doesn’t allow concealed carry, or anything like that for defense. Of course, I don’t know - maybe hired security could be arranged for?

For those FReepers in Chicago, I think this would be a good thing to look into... Of course, the parishoners (and the new pastor) are probably too smart to say anything in the presence of anyone that doesn’t share their skin color.

Probably best if it were a group of black conservatives, now that I really think about it...

I know three Obama supporters and this doesn’t faze them at all. But now we know why Obama doesn’t wear a lapel pin that represents patriotism and supporting the victims of 9/11

You know, that gives me an idea. Someone needs to compare the same subjects of Wright’s speeches and MLK’s speeches on video, subjects like race relations, religion, the founding fathers and patriotism.

I know many want Obama to be the candidate we can beat - I think that is one giant gamble we cannot afford to take.

I couldn't agree more.

This video was aired this morning on GMA.

Obama said that he didn't think his church was "paricularly controversial." Wow.

And listening to the well-clothed, healthy-looking church members talk about how horrible it is to be black in America makes me puke. How far into the depths of self-pity can one plunge?

Apparently, so far that reality becomes totally irrelevant.

I pray that this will hang around Obama/Osama's neck like a skunk for a very very long time!!

I saw the video of that despicable "preacher" and he's no different from Farrakan, in fact he's much much worse since its not what you would expect from a "Christian Preacher".

Farrakan and Jeremiah Wright are the same coin imho.

I dont know about anyone else here, but there is the saving: Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are!! Just look at what his wife's thesis is about: RACISM and her comments that "For the first time in her adult life she's proud to be a American!!"

The whole of Obama/Osama's belief's & group is all about Hate America and all non-Blacks.

America has better quickly wake up lest they find the White House turned into the Home of the Black Panthers + Al Qaida.
