A tornado in Atlanta? Does Atlanta have any kind of tornado warning system (sirens, alets, etc)? I know that Georgia gets bad storms and tornadoes, but this is the first time that I have heard of a tornado hitting the city.

Wow... this was scary. My son is at the Georgia Dome.. we were watching... a tornado definitely hit the building. There’s been damage and the game that was being played has been stopped for nearly 1 hour... getting ready to re-start now.

One hit while I was working in 1989. I remember sitting at my desk with a glass front office. I saw the restaurant sign from down the street fly by and I heard the window creaking. Just as I ducked down under the desk, the huge window imploded. That was the closest I ever came to being so scared I almost wet myself.

About 30 years ago, a small tornado hit the Georgia governor’s mansion on W. Paces Ferry.

Yes, sirens and emergency broadcasts. Sirens wail when a “Watch” is declared. All local tv stations and many cable channels, also, run a ticker across the bottom of the screen.

I live 3.2 miles from the siren in my town (I’m 32 miles SE of downtown, as the crow flies-Henry County). It’s loud and does wake me up, and I sleep the sleep of the dead.

I’m very close to a emergency siren in Metro Atlanta and they do use the system as often as needed.
